Dementia Workshops Continue to be a Success

Local company Home Instead who provide support and assistance to older people living in their own homes have been busy recently delivering dementia workshops in the local community.

The ground breaking workshops were adapted from the company’s City & Guilds accredited dementia training programme, entitled ‘Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease and other Dementia's’ specifically developed for Home Instead’s network of Caregivers. They help both family carers and community members to identify the typical signs of dementia and gain a better understanding of the condition, as well as arming them with effective techniques for managing the many different and sometimes challenging behaviours associated with the condition.

Home Instead owner, Sheena Van Parys commented :’ It is great to be offering these free workshops as we hope they will make a difference because the more we all know and understand about the disease the better for society as a whole. Dementia is indiscriminate with who it inflicts and you may have a friend or relative who gets the disease so we all need to be prepared and understand how it affects people differently resulting in the many varying behaviours’

The most recent workshop was held at Thirsk Community Care for their army of volunteers who support and offer respite to those living with dementia and their families in and around the town of Thirsk.

Home Instead will be running more workshops in the lead up to and during Dementia Awareness Week 15th-21st May
