The team at Home Instead in Harrogate, Ripon and Thirsk really showed their spirit when they participated in a month of fundraising and awareness in aid of dementia, raising over £300 for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The events in September, which took place across Harrogate and the surrounding area included a Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, and participation in 2 local Memory Walks.

Carol Bray, Care Manager at Home Instead in Harrogate, was impressed by her 32-year-old daughter Marie Robinson, and her friend, Cara Connor, who completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge in support of Cara’s mother who is living with dementia.

Carol’s daughter Marie explains why she took on the Three Peaks challenge; ‘’We chose the Yorkshire Three Peaks as we wanted to do a tough challenge and knew this was going to be. We both trained hard and decided this was the challenge for us.  We chose the Alzheimer's Society as Cara’s mum who is 62 has this disease and we wanted to raise awareness and raise money for a charity which is so close to her family, Cara's mum has had this disease for 5 years now”.

The Home Instead team then joined local MP Andrew Jones and Emmerdale actor John Middleton for the Alzheimer’s Society Memory Walk in Valley Gardens and then walked again in the Leeds Memory Walk, raising money and awareness for such an important cause.

Sheena Van Parys, from Home Instead said, “As a company who cares for older people in their own homes we’re very much aware of the impact dementia can have on an older person’s life. However, after speaking to many people in the community, it became clear just how many people have been touched by dementia in some way or another. It was great to see our team pulling together in support of The Alzheimer’s Society.”

Ultimately, the Alzheimer's Society and Home Instead are aiming to promote that it is possible to live well with dementia. Through a combination of support from family, friends or professionals, advice on local activities and available services, as well as ensuring there is a high level of awareness and training in dementia across the community.
