Caring Company Promotes Dignity and Respect

Home Instead in Harrogate, Ripon and Thirsk have pledged their continuing support for the national ‘Dignity in Care’ campaign, headed by Dignity Ambassador Dame Joan Bakewell to promote treating people with dignity as a basic human right.

Dignity Action Day, 1st February,  is an annual opportunity for health and social care workers, and members of the public to uphold people's rights to dignity and provide a truly memorable day for people who use care services. Dignity Action Day aims to ensure people who use care services are treated as individuals and are given choice, control, and a sense of purpose in their daily lives.

 Sheena added; “Throughout February ‘Dignity and Respect’ will be the theme for our caregiver and office team meetings, there will be a viewing of Amanda Waring’s powerful short film entitled ‘What Do You See?” and the ‘10 Dignity Do’s’ that we value every day at Home Instead will be highlighted, these are:

  • Support people with the same respect you would want for yourself or your family.
  • Treat each person as an individual by offering a personalised service.
  • Enable people to maintain the maximum level of independence, choice, and control.
  • Listen and support people to express their needs and wants.
  • Respect people’s right to privacy.
  • Ensure people feel able to complain without fear of retribution.
  • Engage with family members and carers as care partners.
  • Assist people to maintain confidence and a positive self-esteem.
  • Act to alleviate people’s loneliness and isolation.
