Home Instead hosts cinema event for Dementia Action Week

Local Thirsk company Home Instead who support people living at home hosted a cinema event in May for local charity Dementia Forward.

Dementia Action Week

There are around 900,000 people in the UK living with dementia, with the number predicted to rise to 1.6 million by 2040. There has never been a more pressing time to raise awareness of the condition.

Awareness of dementia amongst the general public is low and often it is only when you are personally affected that you start to understand, which is sometimes too late. Not enough people are able to spot the signs of somebody with dementia when out and about. If a customer in front of us in the supermarket queue is struggling with change, sadly not all of us will recognise that they may have dementia and then wait patiently or offer support.

We want you to get your community to ‘Think Dementia’. That means making people more aware of the condition and how they can help people living with it, whether that’s family or strangers they see when out and about. ‘Think Dementia’ should be the overarching focus for the activities you do relating to dementia.

Home Instead who support people to live well with dementia in and around the towns of Harrogate, Ripon and  Thirsk regularly host a dementia friendly screening at the Everyman cinema in Harrogate.  This is where the lights are not too low and the sound not too loud, there are no adverts before the film and attendees can  move around and it is perfectly fine to express yourself.

This year during Dementia Action  Week, 13th-19th May 2024 Home Instead and the Everyman Harrogate organised a special viewing of the hit musical Mamma Mia for local charity Dementia Forward who support people living with dementia and their families across York and North Yorkshire .

Around 40 people attended the event and thoroughly enjoyed singing along to the Abba hits plus the refreshments kindly supplied by the team at the Everyman cinema.
