Home Care in Aldershot
Most people, when hearing the name ‘Aldershot’ think of the army and that is hardly surprising. There has been a garrison at Aldershot since 1854 when the outbreak of the Crimean War made the British government think rather hard and rather fast about improving and increasing the size of the army. Home Instead staff know many people who are connected with the army at Aldershot, but not many know this – there is a ‘military’ link for Aldershot from before the Norman Conquest, because when the Domesday Book was compiled (completed in 1086), it was found that many places around the common where Aldershot now is, allowed property to be left to daughters, not just sons. As a hint for anyone who likes to delve into the history of places they visit, that is a sure sign that there were Vikings in the area, as this was a practice in Scandinavia, but not England at that time.
One thing that our clients here at Home Instead might well find interesting, is that the ‘shot’ in the name Aldershot comes, not from its military links but from the Old English word ‘alder-holt’ being miscopied down the years. Holt means copse and in pre-Norman times – before 1066 – what we know as Aldershot today was just a huge common, dotted about with alder trees. Alder trees are not as common nowadays as they once were, but they are easily identified once you know how – they grow tall and straight and have long catkins which are very fragile and break apart in any wind, which is why Aldershot was an alder copse – where you have one alder, you have many!
Moving on nearly a whole millennium, it would be interesting to know if any Home Instead clients in Aldershot were one of the eighteen people who attended the Beatles’ gig there on 9 December 1961! It seems almost impossible now to think of having such a small turnout for such an iconic band, but their agent, Sam Leach, who was jockeying for position as their manager, got them the gig at the Palais Ballroom in Aldershot but didn’t do any advertising! Despite the woeful turnout, the band had a jam later the Blue Gardenia Club in London, and history was made, even more so when Brian Epstein became their manager. Just think – if there had been advertising and they had fifty people there, they might have made Sam Leach their manager and would have sunk without trace.
Aldershot’s show business links didn’t begin with the Beatles, though – in 1894, Charlie Chaplin performed as a small boy in a play at the Canteen Theatre, coming back ten years later as a professional to act on the stage of the Theatre Royal as it then was.
So, the next time someone says to you ‘Aldershot is a military town’ you can tell them, it certainly is, but it is so much more than that!
