Caring for loved ones is an act of deep commitment. It can be very full-on and sometimes feel like a second job if you are also working alongside it. We all need time to rest and recuperate, but often feelings of guilt may come into play when removing your loved ones from their home that they love and sending them somewhere new.

At Home Instead Exeter and East Devon, we understand the emotional and physical demands of caregiving and we’re here to offer trusted, award-winning respite care services within the comfort of your own home, so you can stay within the walls you know and love.

What is Respite Care at Home?

Respite care at home is when a carer moves into your home temporarily and provides 24/7 support to you. This could be help with mobility, getting up, washed and dressed for the day, assistance with cooking and mealtimes, support with getting out and about to appointments and social events, medication management, pet care and much more.

Respite care can last as long as you need it to from one week to one month, or longer. This can give your current carers a break to go on holiday, visit family or have a little rest themselves. Respite care allows your carers to have time to themselves while knowing that their loved ones are in safe and experienced hands, in the comfort of their own homes.

Why Choose Respite Care at Home

The thought of moving a loved one into a residential facility can sometimes be distressing. Home-based respite care means that the client doesn’t need to relocate anywhere, they are able to remain at home, surrounded by all of their memories.

Often, residential facilities don’t allow people to bring their beloved pets. This is why respite care at home can be so useful, as it allows you to remain at home with them. Our Care Professionals can help you to care for them and take them on walks, feed and brush them as needed.

Case Study

At the beginning of the year we provided respite care for a couple in Honiton. The couple were already clients of ours but we only provided care for a few hours a week, as their daughter, Sally, did a lot of the care herself.

In February, Sally was going to Australia to visit her son for a month and she was worried about her mum and dad going into a residential facility, as her dad was diagnosed with dementia the year before and they had two horses and a dog to care for.

We were able to provide respite care for her mum and dad, in their own home, for a month whilst Sally was away, giving her peace of mind that her parents were being well cared for and supported. Sally was able to log onto our shared app to see the notes from the Care Professionals each day and keep up to date with what they were up to.

Our Care Professional moved into their spare room and helped to care for their horses, walked the dog, took them to appointments, assisted them with medication, supported with washing and made them home cooked meals each day.

Sally said “I was going to cancel my trip to Melbourne when my dad was diagnosed with dementia last year, as I knew he wouldn’t cope in a residential home, but when Home Instead offered their respite services, I knew I could still go ahead. Mum and dad were really well cared for and were able to stay at home. I was able to check in on them via the app, which gave me peace of mind whilst I was away. Thanks again for all your help”.
