'Out Instead' at a hidden gem, in Colyton

Home Instead discover tranquillity with the option of a sweet treat...

Very often, our clients will ask their Care Professionals to accompany them on an outing for a change of scenery, and with our one-hour minimum visits, there is time to provide this tailor-made care. A change of scene often provides a change of perspective, in a positive way.

As part of our ‘Out Instead’ project, we are pleased to tell you about one of East Devon’s hidden gems… If it’s peace and tranquillity that you’re after, with the option of a sweet treat, Blackbury Honey Farm could be the perfect destination.

Set in the East Devon countryside at Colyton (between Sidmouth and Seaton), the farm is easily located and is well signposted. It is actually about a mile from Southleigh village and following the brown coloured ‘Blackbury Camp’ signs will take visitors to the door.

Blackbury Farm is a family operated honey farm offering beekeepers, those interested in wildlife and those looking for a delicious lunch in a lovely setting, the perfect place.

If you’ve a keen interest in beekeeping, there are educational courses on offer, with training at all levels, from beginner to advanced. Courses are led by Ken and Dan, who both hold the highest qualifications in beekeeping! In fact, on entering the Farm Shop foyer, visitors are greeted with a projected video introduction to the farm, and a host of beekeeping and honey related facts. In the foyer you will also find ample toilet facilities, including a fully accessible cubicle.

There is free, ample parking on site (including a number of spaces reserved for blue badge holders, right next door to the farm shop) and level pathways leading to the friendly shop and Tea Room, where you can find a spacious indoor seating area, complete with honey themed gifts – many of them produced locally.

The Tea Room menu offers a great selection of home-made cakes along with hot and cold snacks ranging from sandwiches to jacket potatoes and classic cream teas – and a very warm welcome from the friendly team. The Team have also introduced a ‘Friday Lunch Club’, offering a different home-cooked main course each Friday lunchtime for a set price.

Outdoors, there is a lovely patio area with picnic benches and tables and chairs, which leads to two beautiful flower gardens and an open meadow area. Whilst there are no pathways to parts of this area, the ground is level.

For so many reasons, Blackbury Farm offers our Clients, Care Professionals and other visitors the option of time well spent in gorgeous East Devon, away from the rush of town life. It fully fits the bill as a ‘Client & Care Professional Friendly Venue’. If you would like further information regarding Blackbury Honey Farm, including links to their beekeeping courses and Tea Room menu, please click here.
