Epsom dementia workshops hailed a great success

During National Dementia Awareness Week (19-26 May) Home Instead Epsom held free dementia workshops for family carers

Epsom is one the first places in the UK where these unique family workshops have been introduced by Home Instead Senior Care. The ground breaking workshops were adapted from the company’s City & Guilds accredited dementia training programme, specifically developed for Home Instead’s caregivers.

Explaining the rationale behind the workshops, Jill Tame from Home Instead said, “People prefer to remain at home and this is particularly relevant for dementia sufferers who benefit from familiar surroundings and routines. However, when family members must take on the role of being the main carer they can often become overwhelmed, physically and mentally with the uncertainties and pressures of caring for a loved one.

“Our workshops, which were extremely well received, taught people to identify the typical signs of dementia and gain a better understanding of the condition. They also armed family carers and others in the community with effective techniques for managing the many different and sometimes challenging behaviours associated with dementia including refusal, delusions, aggression, false accusations, wandering and agitation.”

Due to their success, more workshops are scheduled to be held next month in the coming months. The team at Home Instead would welcome calls from anyone interested in attending. For further information please call: 01372 741544 or visit www.homeinstead.co.uk/epsom.
