We don’t talk about it enough—but we should.
Depression is the most common mental health condition affecting older adults, and according to the NHS, it’s also the most treatable. Around 1 in 5 older people in the community live with depression, and that number only rises in the presence of physical illness or during hospital or care home stays. Anxiety often runs alongside, with about 1 in 20 people over 65 also living with anxiety disorders.
But here’s the heartening truth: mental health can improve at any age. And at Home Instead Epsom, we believe that anyone and everyone should thrive—at every age and stage.
The Power of Daily Moments
We know that mental health support doesn’t always come in the form of formal therapy. Sometimes, it looks like a gentle walk through the park. A shared pot of tea and a laugh over old memories. The simple feeling of being seen, heard, and valued.
That’s the heart of our Companionship Care—care that isn’t just about practical help, but meaningful connection. Whether it’s popping by for a cuppa and a chat, going to the local shop together, or supporting someone to attend a community group they’ve missed, our Care Professionals provide consistency, warmth, and genuine companionship. And the impact of that? It’s often life-changing. Read our blog to find out more about our guide to care.
Movement, Meals & Meaningful Moments
Supporting mental wellbeing doesn’t require grand gestures. It’s the little things that build resilience and restore confidence. Here’s how we help older adults feel stronger in mind and body:
Connection is Everything
Loneliness and isolation can be some of the biggest threats to mental wellbeing in later life—but connection is the antidote. We help foster it in every way we can.
At Home Instead Epsom, we’re proud of our deep roots in the local community. We regularly connect clients with friendly local initiatives like Make It Happen Epsom & Ewell—from gardening clubs and social cafes to gentle exercise classes and arts groups. And when someone doesn’t feel confident going alone? We go with them. Because no one should feel like they’re navigating life’s changes by themselves.
One of the brilliant local resources we often signpost families to is The Conservatory Club in Leatherhead, run by the Mid Surrey Dementia Care Trust. It’s a welcoming, activity-based club designed for individuals experiencing memory difficulties or in the early stages of dementia. Members can attend up to three days a week, enjoying gentle activities, companionship and conversation in a relaxed, homely setting. Just as importantly, the club offers vital respite for family carers—giving them a much-needed break from the 24/7 demands of caring, and helping them sustain their ability to care at home, for longer and with less strain. It’s a fantastic example of how community-led support can make all the difference, both emotionally and practically.
Mental Health Deserves Real Conversation
At Home Instead Epsom, we see every client as a whole person—with a rich history and a right to a fulfilling future. Our approach to care supports mental health not just by noticing the signs but by building the kind of everyday life where wellbeing can grow.
If someone you love could use a little more support, or if you just want to talk about how we can help—our door (and phone line) is always open.
