It’s easy to underestimate the power of company – a chat over tea, a familiar song, a shared laugh. But staying socially connected is just as important for our health as staying physically active.

Research shows that people who engage regularly with others are happier, more confident, and less likely to experience loneliness or decline in memory and mood.

At Home Instead Epping Forest, we see this every day. A simple conversation can brighten someone’s week. A shared hobby or community event can reignite confidence and purpose.

That’s why we encourage everyone, whether living alone, caring for a loved one, or simply looking to meet new people, to keep connected through local events and groups this autumn and winter.

Local Events That Bring People Together

Across Epping, Loughton, Ongar, and the surrounding villages, there’s plenty happening to help people stay active and social through the colder months. Our new Autumn/Winter 2025 Networking Newsletter: What’s On Where brings all this together, from dementia-friendly cafés and singing groups to gentle exercise classes and coffee mornings.

If you’re looking for something uplifting, why not join one of Home Instead Epping Forest’s monthly events at Theydon Bois Village Hall?

Each gathering has its own theme, from VE Day afternoons filled with music and dancing to seasonal celebrations like Halloween and Christmas. The afternoons are open to everyone, including those living with dementia and their families, and they always end with plenty of smiles (and cake).

Some of our guests told us after a recent event:

“You make a lot of difference to a lot of people.”

“It was such a happy afternoon.”

These events show how music, movement, and laughter can connect people in ways that words sometimes can’t.

More Ways to Stay Active and Connected

Not everyone wants large gatherings, and that’s okay. There are many smaller ways to keep engaged, depending on your interests:

Memory Lane Café – Second Wednesday of the month, 2.30–4pm, Theydon Bois Village Hall.

Singing for the Brain – Third Wednesday of the month, 10.30am–Noon.

Community Scam Awareness Sessions – Run in partnership with Essex Police to help older residents feel confident and informed.

Dementia Information Drop-ins – Visit Loughton or Ongar Library to chat with our friendly team.

Chair exercise and social groups – Held across Epping, North Weald, and Waltham Abbey, perfect for gentle movement and a chat.

All these activities remind us that connection doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, it’s simply about showing up, sharing a smile, and spending time together.

The Wellbeing Benefits of Social Connection

Regular interaction helps improve mental health, reduce stress, and even lower the risk of certain health problems. For older adults, staying connected can improve memory, maintain independence, and bring structure and joy to daily life.

Even a few hours a week spent with others can boost mood and energy levels. That’s why our Care Professionals at Home Instead often help clients attend local groups, walk to nearby cafés, or keep up with their favourite hobbies. Small outings make a big difference; they bring routine, laughter, and a sense of belonging.
