Alzheimer's Awareness Month - Lighting Up Dudley Zoo for World Alzheimer's Day

Join Home Instead Dudley this Alzheimer's Awareness Month to promote awareness and early diagnosis. We're partnering with Dudley Zoo & Castle to light up the entrance.

This September, all of our team at Home Instead Dudley are taking the opportunity to shine a light on Alzheimer’s—a condition that impacts the lives of millions worldwide. We’re committed to raising awareness and building a supportive local community for those living with dementia.

This year, we are especially thrilled to partner with Dudley Zoo & Castle in a special initiative to commemorate World Alzheimer’s Day.

Lighting up Dudley Zoo & Castle in Alzheimer’s Awareness Purple

In collaboration with Dudley Zoo & Castle, we are proud to announce the illumination of the zoo’s iconic entrance—featuring five gates, eight turnstiles and ticket offices—in a striking purple from 16th to 22nd September, the colour that represents Alzheimer’s awareness.

This initiative is part of a global movement where buildings are lit in purple to mark World Alzheimer’s Day across the world. By lighting the zoo’s entrance in vibrant purple, we aim to raise awareness, encourage important conversations, and build a stronger sense of community around dementia support.

Dudley Zoo

"We hope that by lighting up Dudley Zoo’s iconic entrance in purple, we can make a statement that helps to raise awareness about the challenges faced by those living with dementia and their families," says Julie, Owner of Home Instead Dudley. "It's about building a community that understands and supports each other, and we’re proud to be part of this important initiative."

Stepping together towards a Dementia-Friendly Dudley

At Home Instead Dudley, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful attractions our town has to offer, regardless of the challenges they face. That’s why we’re delighted to support Dudley Zoo & Castle in their efforts to become a dementia-friendly organisation. Throughout September, the zoo staff will participate in our Dementia Friends information sessions, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to create a warm and welcoming environment for visitors living with dementia and their families and caregivers.

Promoting awareness and early diagnosis across Dudley and Sandwell South

We are dedicated to promoting early diagnosis and providing ongoing support for those living with dementia. This year, we will be distributing the Alzheimer’s Society dementia checklist throughout our community in Dudley and Sandwell South.

Early recognition of dementia symptoms is crucial—it allows for timely intervention, appropriate support, and access to treatments that can help maintain independence for as long as possible. By sharing these checklists, we hope to encourage more people to recognise the signs of dementia and seek the support they need.

“Going Purple” for Alzheimer’s Awareness

Our office in Tipton is preparing for a Purple Day, a special celebration in support of World Alzheimer’s Day. Our Care Professionals and office team will be wearing purple outfits and with a purple-themed buffet to show our solidarity with the Alzheimer’s Society and everyone affected by dementia. Purple is used to represent the strength and determination in the fight against Alzheimer’s. This fun event is about raising awareness and also about bringing the whole team together in a shared commitment to understanding and supporting our clients and their families who are impacted by dementia.

How you can get involved

Whether it’s sharing information, participating in local events, wearing a purple ribbon, or simply showing kindness and understanding to those living with dementia, there are countless ways to get involved. By working together, we can create a community that truly cares and supports each other. Let’s mark World Alzheimer’s Day with a united effort to raise awareness and promote empathy.
