Spring’s the perfect excuse for a bit of a tidy-up; a chance to freshen the place up and clear the clutter. But while you’re at it, it’s also a good time to spot any falling hazards around the house.

At Home Instead Dudley & Sandwell, we work with older and less mobile adults every day. We know that falls are a leading cause of injury later in life. Luckily, we also know that with a few small changes, it’s easy to make the home a safer place.

Safety First While You Clean

Here are some quick ways to make spring cleaning safer and help reduce the risk of falls:

1. Clear the Clutter: Keep hallways and stairs clear by removing obstacles like shoes and bags from the floor.

2. Check the Flooring: Use non-slip mats for rugs and keep cables tucked along walls to avoid tripping.

3. Light It Up: Bulbs must be bright and working, especially in bathrooms and on stairs. Nightlights are also handy.

4. Keep Things Near: Store everyday items like kettles or medicine in easy-to-reach areas.

5. Use the Right Tools: Use a sturdy step stool or long-handled tools for cleaning high spots.

Easy Fixes Around the House

Some minor adjustments are all that’s needed to make a home safer:

– Fit grab rails in key spots like bathrooms and by the stairs.

– Place non-slip mats in wet areas like the bathroom and kitchen.

– Move furniture to create clear, wider walkways.

– Choose well-fitting shoes with grip instead of wearing slippers or socks indoors.

Healthy Habits Help Too

Don’t discount the importance of keeping your well-being in check.

  • Keep active with gentle exercise, like walking or stretching, to help improve strength and balance.
  • Check your vision and hearing, as even small changes can affect your balance.
  • Follow a healthy diet and stay hydrated to help keep energy up and bones strong.
  • Chat about your medications with your GP or pharmacist, as some are known to cause dizziness.
