Are We Listening Enough? Why World Alzheimer’s Month 2025 Matters in Cuffley

Every September, World Alzheimer’s Month invites us all to listen more closely. It asks us to hear the voices of people living with dementia, to recognise the stories of family carers, and to value the experience of the professionals who support them. At Home Instead Cuffley, Cheshunt & Harlow, we are proud to be part of this important campaign by sharing real-life experiences, taking part in local activities, and encouraging open conversations across our community. This year’s theme, Ask About Dementia, reminds us that awareness starts with a question, and meaningful change begins when we truly take time to listen. From our care professionals to our clients and their families, we are shining a light on the everyday moments that make dementia care both personal and powerful.

In this blog, we explore how World Alzheimer’s Month is being recognised here in Cuffley, what Home Instead is doing to raise awareness, and how you can take part throughout September.

What Is World Alzheimer’s Month?

From 1 to 30 September, World Alzheimer’s Month brings people together across the globe to raise awareness, push for better care and support, and honour the individuals behind the diagnosis. The 2025 theme, #AskAboutDementia, is a direct invitation to do just that, ask, listen, and learn.

Too often, conversations about dementia happen in hushed tones or not at all. This campaign aims to change that. By encouraging dialogue, challenging stereotypes, and elevating real-life stories, it provides a platform for meaningful action.

Mark Your Calendar: World Alzheimer’s Day

At the heart of the campaign is World Alzheimer’s Day on 21 September, a time to reflect, remember, and renew our commitment to improving the lives of those affected.

Here at Home Instead Cuffley, our care professionals witness the realities of dementia every day. We know that behind every diagnosis is a person with memories, preferences, emotions, and relationships. And we believe every story deserves to be heard.

Why This Campaign Matters to Cuffley

Dementia is the UK’s leading cause of death. It affects not just individuals but entire family networks. From young carers to retired spouses, the ripple effect is vast. Despite this, access to care remains fragmented. People are often left confused by complex NHS funding processes, long diagnosis waits, or a lack of clarity about local support.

Campaigns like World Alzheimer’s Month aren’t just symbolic—they’re an opportunity to press for real change. They shine a light on the everyday struggles that families face and provide a way to push back against silence and stigma.

And we’re not standing on the sidelines.

Is Anyone in Our Office Raising Awareness?

Yes, and we’d love to hear from more of you. We’re asking our team at Home Instead Cuffley, Cheshunt & Harlow to share how they’re helping raise awareness this September. Whether you’re taking part in a local Memory Walk, wearing purple in support, or sharing stories on social media, let us know. We’d be proud to highlight your efforts and inspire others to get involved.

The Stories That Matter: Real Voices from the Dementia Community

This year’s theme is more than a hashtag. #AskAboutDementia centres real people navigating dementia in a system that can feel overwhelming or difficult to navigate. Stories like these give the campaign weight and humanity:

  • Gail, diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at 54, continues to advocate for better awareness: “I’m more than my dementia diagnosis. I’m still me.”
  • Mahersh, a full-time carer, encountered significant challenges navigating NHS systems in trying to secure NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) for his mother.
  • Lizzie, who became a carer at just 16 when her father was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, juggles school and caregiving in a way most teenagers never imagine.

Their experiences reflect what we hear locally, stories of strength, frustration, love, and resilience. They are reminders that dementia doesn’t just happen to “older people” or “other families.” It affects people of all ages, at all stages of life.

How You Can Get Involved This September

World Alzheimer’s Month isn’t only for charities or healthcare providers—it’s a moment for communities, families, and workplaces to come together. Here are some practical ways you can get involved:

1. Join a Memory Walk

The Alzheimer’s Society’s Memory Walk series runs throughout September and October. These walks honour loved ones, raise funds, and show solidarity. Whether you join a larger walk or organise something local here in Cuffley, the power is in the participation.

Nearby walk locations include:

  • 4 October – Chelmsford
  • 5 October – London (Potters Fields Park)

We’d love to gather a small group from our Home Instead Cuffley team and clients’ families, interested? Let us know and we can coordinate transport and support.

2. Share Your Story

This year’s campaign asks you to share your experiences on social media. Tag @DementiaUK and use the hashtags #AskAboutDementia and #AskAboutAlzheimers to reach others and build understanding.

Stories from our clients, their families, and our own care team have the potential to offer comfort and connection to others going through similar journeys.

3. Support a Local Event

While national events are powerful, local ones can feel even more impactful. Whether it’s a dementia-friendly café, a reminiscence afternoon, or a music session, these events create safe, inclusive spaces.

We’re exploring ways to host a local awareness drop-in session here in Cuffley during September, where people can learn more about dementia, speak to our team, and access support literature.

If you’d like to help organise or contribute, we’d love to hear from you.

4. Campaign for Better Support

Dementia UK offers a template letter you can send to your MP, asking them to commit to improving dementia care and funding. After the recent UK General Election, there’s fresh opportunity to push dementia higher up the political agenda.

5. Donate

Every contribution helps fund services like Admiral Nurses and critical research into dementia care. Even small donations make a difference.

Why Early Diagnosis and Support Matter

A timely diagnosis opens the door to support services, community groups, and care planning. It also helps families feel less isolated and better equipped to understand what lies ahead.

At Home Instead Cuffley, we offer tailored, home-based dementia care that allows individuals to remain in familiar surroundings for as long as possible. Whether it’s help with daily routines or companionship, our trained care professionals are here to help.

A Word on Research and the Future

Despite its widespread impact, dementia research receives a fraction of the funding that other major health conditions do. This year’s World Alzheimer Report 2025 will focus on rehabilitation and tailored care, reminding us that dementia support isn’t just about diagnosis and decline, but about improving quality of life, even in later stages.

If we want a future with better outcomes, we must support research today.
