Kate Smith - Client Manager
Hi ! My name is Kate. I'm the Registered Care Manager and I am responsible for managing the smooth delivery of all aspects of the 'outstanding' care services we provide. I’m an organiser and a very ‘can-do’ person and I love to plan and make sure our our services are delivered to the highest standards at all times. You will probably find it’s me who answers the phone when you call wanting to know more about our services and I make sure things ‘happen’ from that point forward. I visit all new clients to discover their needs, wants and wishes and alleviate any worries or concerns and then make sure we deliver. I started with Home Instead as a CAREGiver though quickly realised I would also enjoy working in the busy office environment too. - I love the work I do and the people I work with whether they are clients, families, Caregivers, my office team or Directors – they are all like friends; professional, trustworthy, dependable and also fun to be around. I am very hardworking and conscientious which is important to ensure we deliver upon all expectations and promises and that everything is ‘right first time’. I cover all aspects of the business from assisting with recruiting really good Caregivers to coordinating the ‘perfect-matching’ of clients to Caregivers, making sure the right people are in the right place at the right time. I take great pleasure in building long term relationships with our clients and their families. We have a great rapport and it is very rewarding to know that I ‘make a difference’. Like all employees, managers, as well as the owners of Home Instead Cleveland, we all regularly visit clients which keeps us constantly focussed on what it takes to provide the best care possible, day in, day out. Outside of work I enjoy riding my motorbike and doing a lot of work for local charities. I have also worked in Kenya and Tanzania helping provide essential medical equipment for local medical practices and equipment for local schools. This experience helped change my view of the world and made me realise my passion in life is to help and support others. Qualified with a Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health & Social Care, every day is different and I’m thrilled to be building my career with such a fantastic company.

I train and develop all our new Caregivers when they start with Home Instead and professionally develop experienced Caregivers. I ensure that right from the start, our specially selected, excellent employees comply with, and surpass, all Care Quality Commission standards, but above all, your own and your loved ones expectations, the Home Instead way. Our standard of care is exceptional and award winning, and that responsibility starts with me!
With in-depth experience from a 30 year career in elderly health and social care with qualifications and as a previous Registered Care Manager with the Care Quality Commission, I am delighted to be part of an exceptionally positive and able, office management team who all share my own intrinsic values and passion for delivering a high quality, trusted and reliable service that you would only expect for your own family. Having been responsible for achieving a Grade One (highest quality) status Care Home prior to joining Home Instead, I know what great care looks like. With Home Instead, I know you can’t get better care and I’m so pleased to be able to share my knowledge and experiences and influence a really happy, team of dedicated Caregiver employees delivering what people want!
I have specialist skills in Dementia and am involved in helping individuals and families and Caregivers with bespoke support and advice to ensure all can live well at home with dementia. I also really enjoy visiting clients and so routinely visit the lovely ladies and gents I am matched with outside of my ‘office-based’ hours.
I am a real person too! I have lived my whole life in Teesside though I have spent some time working as an English Teacher in Egypt which was fabulous and fascinating as well as completely enlightening! I am married to Jeff and have 2 children as well as 5 lovely grandchildren too. Apart from travelling to countries far and wide I also enjoy more homely activities such as cooking and spending quality time with my growing family. I am so pleased to be able to do the job I love whilst being able to help so many people. I take great delight in knowing that many more elderly people are able to have the quality support they rightly deserve because I train great people to become quality Caregivers.
Michelle Fairless - Director of Care
For me it's quite simple, I love what I do! Making a huge difference to families!
I have developed a great passion for providing the highest quality service to older people and their families that sadly I just couldn’t find for my own family when we needed it. Unfortunately there are many, many people who continue to share my experiences. Knowing of the incredible difficulties and near impossible challenges many families have faced when service providers have failed to deliver sometimes the most basic levels of dignity and care, my mission has become to provide the very best elderly care possible. We deliver what we promise. My dream to make a real difference is now reality. Qualified with a Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health & Social Care, it has been so rewarding to see the hugely positive impact that the service we deliver has on people's lives, not only the people we provide care for directly, but their families as well, providing them with much needed peace of mind through our excellent care and companionship service. The end result is that this combination enables us to help more people remain independent, happy and fulfilled in their own homes, where most older people want to be for far longer than is often the case, with their families knowing they couldn’t have made a better choice. A choice, sadly, I never had. However, as a direct result of that, to have created and built a company that is now rated as 'Outstanding' by the Care Quality Commission, fills me with pride!
Outside of work, Gavin and I enjoy many outdoor activities, particularly in the countryside. We also have 4 children, who themselves have diverse social lives and sporting interests such as cycling, football, karate, netball, hockey along with the usual x boxes and ipads! The final addition is our black Labrador who ensures we are kept busy at all times! Very rarely do we find ourselves wondering what to do next or where to go!
Gavin Morrigan - Company Operations Director
I am a local lad, born and bred in Stockton-on-Tees and after a moving to London for university and a career, was drawn back quite quickly to my native area where I love to live and where I wanted to bring up my family! Over the years, I have enjoyed many great times battling on the rugby pitch for Stockton Rugby Club, among other great teams, before my bones and sinews deciding they just couldn’t cope with the strains anymore! More sedately, I have been a long standing member and three times Chairman of Stockton & Yarm Round Table. This involved me supporting many good local causes and charities, including older people, always wanting to be able to contribute to the good of the local community and wider area. On a work front, I have enjoyed a successful career working from the ground up to senior management levels in Human Resources Management and Organisational Development with small as well as very large organisations - I just love being involved with people. I get a great deal of personal satisfaction recruiting, training, developing and nurturing great quality staff who deliver fantastic services and who truly enjoy and are totally engaged in the work they do. Whilst always working very hard for other people improving and bettering their organisations, my real quest has been to run my own top quality business. I bumped into Home Instead who were looking to open a new office in Cleveland and have not looked back! Both Gavin and I are proud to be able to offer the very best personalised care provided to all our clients. We are only able to do this because of our fantastic Caregivers who, whilst being extremely loyal, reliable and fun to work with, give such great dedication and genuine care to all our clients.
They all undergo a unique induction training program and receive specialist client training (for example Parkinson’s; Dementia; Alzheimer’s and Diabetes among many other conditions) giving them the right tools they need to provide the best service to their clients.
We like to think we only select the best. Our Caregivers are not generally people who ‘need’ jobs, but people who genuinely want to provide exceptional care, many of whom have found it really rewarding and fulfilling having looked after their own family members and who want to do good for others. In turn we look after our Caregivers well which enables us to depend upon a reliable, dedicated, loyal and very capable team. To know that through an external independent survey, 100% of our employees 'are proud to work for the company' is the icing on the cake. They love what they do!
I have always taken great pleasure in ‘being there’ for other people. I have spent many years running youth groups and helping support young carers who, selflessly, give up their childhoods to look after their own family members, often through necessity. I have had, and continue to support family members too who have had significant life traumas all alongside keeping up a full time Managers job in the Health Authority as it once was. Now retired from corporate life, I take great satisfaction in being able to support some great ladies and gentlemen rekindle some of the pleasures of life they thought they were slowly losing. Not anymore! Trips out, healthy debates and rediscovering wildlife…..recovering more of the person they once were and the happiness that these activities continue to bring, gives me great fulfilment in my daily life.
