Reaching out to seniors

Every month we run a regular Vintage Afternoon Tea for elderly residents who are at risk of social isolation. Keeping our communities connected, especially seniors, is something we are passionate about at Home Instead. The teas give people who might otherwise find it difficult to get out and about, the chance to do so safely with support. They help seniors make new friends, hear about other opportunities to socialise through local activities, clubs and support networks. Our aim is to work together to create a local community where no one is lonely or isolated.

Our guests love the opportunity to get out and make new friends, here are a few of their comments:

“Everyone is so kind, patient and helpful, especially helping me get in and out of the car as I struggle on my own, I wouldn’t be able to go without the volunteers help.” Dawn

“I have made a friend off the back of coming to the teas, another guest who lives in the same road. We now visit each other’s homes every week for tea and a chat.” Pamela

“Wonderful food, great company. It’s nice to see friends, new and old. The transport drivers are wonderful. We are always spoilt for choice.” Alan & James (who have become friends as a result of the teas)

These events are made possible thanks to our wonderful volunteer drivers and our partner organisations including The Frinton Rotary Club, Frinton Links Golf Club, Parkers Garden Company, Clacton Bowls Club, Homelands Church and Frinton Gospel Chapel. We’ve also been lucky enough to gain some funding from Home Instead Charities to support the cost of hall hires and catering.

Join our Volunteer Team

If you are interested in supporting these wonderful events that make such a difference to our senior residents, we are always looking for more people to join our wonderful team of volunteers.  You offer as much or as little time as you can spare but must be able to drive and have access to a car.

Home Instead volunteer Adrienne Bertram feels volunteering at the afternoon teas makes the world of difference, she said: “If we can come together to foster a culture where community members support and look after one another, we’re creating a network of care that can be transformative for all ages. The afternoon tea events serve as a reminder of the importance of showing kindness every day. Even the smallest acts can leave lasting impressions.”

If you run a local business with a venue that would be perfect to host an event, we would love to hear from you. And of course if you live locally and struggle to get out or feel isolated and would like to find out how to apply to become a guest please contact either Alex Webb or Jo Thorne on 01255 672269.
