Celebratory Afternoon Tea Brings Seniors Together

Sharing Life's Special Moments
We recently hosted an afternoon of celebration, community, and companionship for 20 seniors celebrating birthdays.
The event was part of the home-care companies regular Vintage Afternoon Tea events, aimed at reducing loneliness amongst home alone seniors through enriching social engagement. It’s also part of a wider initiative led by the franchise owner, Jean Allen, who proudly celebrates her own milestone 70th birthday this year, with a number of activities planned, reaffirming her commitment to ensuring older adults feel valued, connected, and truly seen as they age.
Jean said: “My 70th year has made me reflect on just how precious growing older truly is—it’s a gift not afforded to us all. Eighteen years ago, I set up Home Instead in Frinton because I wanted to support the community I live in to age well, with dignity and choice. I’ve always believed that care at home should be personal—it’s more than just a service, it’s a relationship. No two people are the same, and everyone deserves care that recognises their individuality and helps them feel seen and valued.”

Friends Share their 86th Birthday
The celebratory Afternoon Tea brought together clients and guests who have recently celebrated, or are soon to celebrate, their birthdays, giving them a chance to share life’s special moments, and ensure no one feels forgotten on their birthday.
Guests Pat Layton and Beryl Watts who celebrate their 86th birthdays, just a few days apart were thrilled to join in the fun, as Beryl explains: “It’s lovely to be invited out and we were both so looking forward to the afternoon. My eyesight isn’t great, so I don’t go out so much anymore, which makes these events a real lifeline for me. Pat and I had a lovely afternoon, we were made to feel so welcome and special, what a treat.”

Home Instead Staff and Volunteers Bake for Party
Hosted by Clacton-on-Sea Bowling Club, the birthday celebrations were filled with laughter, conversation, and a strong sense of community. Guests were treated to delicious sandwiches and an array of home-made birthday cakes baked by Home Instead staff and volunteers. Everyone joined in a rousing round of Happy Birthday.
Guests left with full hearts—and full stomachs—having enjoyed a memorable afternoon dedicated to celebration, kindness, and community spirit.
Throughout the year, Jean will be visiting many of Home Insteads’ clients on their birthdays with a card, a thoughtful gift and her warmest wishes, before rounding off the celebrations with her own 60s-themed birthday party shared with friends, staff and family.
