As a carer you spend a lot of time focusing on others that it can become difficult to also prioritise yourself. However, taking time to acknowledge and attend to your own well-being is just as important, for you and the ones you care for.

Whether you are a loved one supporting your family or one of our Care Professionals, Home Instead Chingford are prepared to help you in any way that we can. Below are a few small things that may help to relieve any pressure that you are experiencing. Our team have created a list of self-care methods that have supported them in the past.

Firstly, a big step is excepting and acknowledging your own needs, we can’t look after others if we don’t look after ourselves. Taking time away to address and give time to yourself is vital. Often carers feel the responsibility quite intense which could lead to guilt whenever they take time away. Breaks in whatever form, an hour or a few days, boost energy levels and reduce stress. Organising time away enables you to be a better carer by making the time you are their quality.

Prioritising your needs during time away is important and understanding it doesn’t always need to be productive. Productivity comes in many forms in a situation, listen to your body sometimes we need to rest.

It is a very brave act to ask for help, please don’t be afraid to share your struggles with friends and family. Often, we don’t realise how people can support us, even with regular updates so a situation isn’t as isolating. Even if they pop in for a coffee, the chance to socialise with others can be refreshing for both you and who you’re caring for.

Looking after your physical health is just as important as our mental health. Try eating as healthily as you can and include some sort of physical activity into your routine. Both have great health benefits but also give a rush or endorphins to boost your mood!

Don’t forget the impact a lack of sleep can have on yourself; quality sleep makes it easier to cope with everyday challenges and gears us with the right headspace to support ourselves. Sleep is not always easy for everyone but trying relaxation techniques such as meditation can help ease our bodies and mind.

Doing all these at once can be daunting and feel unachievable. Starting one can help to put the others into action and can quickly provide a bit of peace. All these are great but please don’t forget that there is help available from Home Instead Chingford and the wider community such as charities. We are all on hand to help you navigate this period in your life and support in any way we can. Please call one of our team on 0208 114 2000, we’re here to talk when you need us.
