Elderly lupus Care at home

Lupus care at home from dedicated Care Professionals with the experience to support older adults living with lupus, and managing its unique and challenging symptoms.

What is lupus care?

Lupus is an autoimmune disease causing the immune system to attack the body’s own tissues and organs. Around 1 in 1000 people in the UK are affected, and everyone has a different experience with the condition. Some of the most common inflammatory symptoms include joint and muscle pain, severe fatigue that will not ease with rest, skin rashes, headaches, weight loss, and mental health issues like depression or anxiety.

Symptoms tend to flare up then settle down after some time, so while constant care may not be required, older adults living with lupus symptoms may find they need help with various tasks to maintain their usual routines. This could involve personal care, home help and mobility support to stay safe and comfortable at home.

Why is lupus care at home important for older adults?

Lupus care could help with a number of symptoms and associated conditions, particularly for older people. For example:

  • Arthritis – Research suggests those with lupus will likely develop arthritis, which may require mobility support
  • Fatigue – Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms of lupus, and many people who experience this need help with daily tasks
  • Depression – Depression is thought to be common alongside lupus, so having at-home care could offer emotional support for this
  • Skin rashes – Studies find lupus can cause a rash on the cheeks and nose, which could impact an older person’s confidence

Additional health issues – Inflammation from lupus is known to cause associated issues with the kidneys, heart and lungs, which may need monitoring by healthcare professionals.
