What are the benefits of celebrating Father’s Day?

In the UK, Father’s Day takes place on the third Sunday in June, and is an excellent opportunity to indulge in nostalgia about old times (particularly helpful for some people with cognitive or memory issues), and connection with their children and grandchildren (which can help to reduce feelings of loneliness). Celebrating Father’s Day allows them to engage in their favourite activities, or spend time outside of the house with your support, if able.

Surprisingly, only 7% of Brits say they get their father an experience-based gift for Father’s Day, but for an older father who suffers from mobility issues or health conditions that limit his ability to leave home, an at-home activity could be the ideal gift that is enjoyable and enriching.

What are the best Father’s Day activities for older dads?

When it comes to Father’s Day activities, many will depend on your elderly dad’s mobility and health. These include:

  • A day trip to a park, seaside or one of their favourite places
  • A family BBQ
  • A movie night with the grandkids
  • A game night where they can share their favourite games
  • An organised lunch, either at home or elsewhere (if they can/would like to go out)
  • A look through old photo albums (you could play these digitally on the TV for family)
  • Garden activities like garden games, or lunch outside
  • A DIY or crafting session together
  • A simple day at home with tea, cake and a chat to improve your connection

Father’s Day activities are best when tailored to your dad’s personality, preferences and abilities, to ensure he has a great day.

Does my dad need home care?

If your father lives with a health issue, or has been generally struggling lately while living alone, home care could help to make his life easier, improve loneliness, or even encourage him to take part in enjoyable activities more often – not just on special occasions.

Whether or not your father requires regular home care, if you believe this could have a positive impact on his quality of life then arranging this–even for just a few days so he can try it out–could be a practical Father’s Day gift that creates a foundation of support to alleviate the worst of life’s stressors.
