Elderly Home Care housekeeping costs

Housekeeping costs
Friendly, affordable housekeeping services from experienced Care Professionals who can combine home help with personal care, specialist care, and other at-home care services.
Keeping a clean and safe home is an important part of supporting an elderly loved one’s wellbeing. Home care with housekeeping services can help with daily chores, from cleaning to laundry, ensuring comfort and safety.
What is housekeeping in elderly care?
Housekeeping services are commonly used by anyone who needs extra help with chores, but for elderly people this could be essential for their wellbeing and hygiene if they have mobility issues that make managing their home more challenging or risky. An NHS survey found that 24% of men and 28% of women aged over 65 needed help with at least one daily activity, so housekeeping services are designed to help with tasks like:
- Tidying away clutter
- Running errands or shopping
- Laundry and cleaning
- Changing bed linens
- Taking bins out
- Feeding pets
While other housekeeping services are purely to keep homes clean and tidy, housekeeping for the elderly may focus more on ensuring the environment remains hygienic and clutter-free for their health and safety.

How much does housekeeping cost?
The cost of housekeeping for older people will depend on the services that may be included alongside, how often you receive the service, how much is involved, and where in the country you reside. Typically, housekeeping falls in line with the cost of more general visiting care, which – according to the NHS – may be around £20ph (location dependent). Homecare.co.uk also suggests home care rates fall between £26ph and £38ph, so your total cost may vary.
At Home Instead, our average weekday care costs range from £29.88 to £33.52ph, and our weekend and evening care costs range from £29.88 to £35.22ph, however these may be adjusted if, for example, you only need 30 minutes of care. Ultimately, housekeeping costs depend on your needs and schedule.
What is included in the cost of housekeeping?
Housekeeping services are highly customisable, so your dedicated Care Professional will use your guidance to shape a package of home help that suits your needs and preferences.
Whether you would like a once-a-week visit to do laundry and take the bins out, or daily check-ins to walk the dog, do dishes and take care of any other frequent needs, we can design a housekeeping arrangement to suit you. You could choose from the above services, or additional services such as vacuuming, home decluttering, ironing, dusting, home maintenance and more. Whatever will help your house feel like home, we can provide the support you need to keep it clean and tidy without the stress or risk.

Get in touch Can housekeeping be combined with other care services?
Yes. While housekeeping services for older people can exist independently, they tend to be offered alongside other care services to make the most of your Care Professional’s time. For example, if you are beginning to struggle with getting dressed in the morning, taking the dog for a walk, or you have a specific health condition that needs daily monitoring (such as diabetes), multiple services can be combined to ensure your health and home are taken care of simultaneously, such as housekeeping, diabetes monitoring, personal care, and companionship.
If your care needs become frequent enough that live-in care becomes more appropriate, this can also include housekeeping services.
Why Home Instead?
We understand the importance of maintaining independence as much as possible, and we know that doing housework can positively impact health in older people, so while we can take over as many chores as you like, we also aim to encourage independence in managing your home where possible. At Home Instead, our Care Professionals can be as involved or as hands-off as you like, and housekeeping can be personalised to your needs.
We are proudly rated 9.6 on Homecare.co.uk, with many of our locations also rated “outstanding” by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), so whatever combination of services you need, you can rest assured you will be matched with a friendly, respectful caregiver who can design a housekeeping package to suit you.
Advice & Support
FAQs
- What is included in housekeeping services for elderly home care?
Home care housekeeping services typically include tasks such as cleaning, laundry, meal preparation, grocery shopping, and maintaining a safe and tidy living environment. These services are designed to support elderly people who may struggle with daily household chores.
- How much do housekeeping services cost in the UK as part of elderly home care?
The cost of housekeeping services varies depending on the location, the level of support required, and the care provider. On average, Home Instead’s hourly rates range from £30 to £34, but this can vary based on the specific services provided, and the region.
- What factors influence the cost of home care housekeeping services?
Costs are influenced by factors such as the frequency and duration of visits, the complexity of tasks, and the location. Additional services, such as deep cleaning or meal preparation, may also affect the overall price.
- Are elderly housekeeping services covered by the NHS or local authorities?
In most cases, housekeeping services are not covered by the NHS. However, local authorities may provide some support or funding if the elderly person qualifies for social care assistance. Private arrangements are often required for additional or specialised services.
- How can private home care housekeeping be a cost-effective option?
Private home care allows elderly people to tailor services to their specific needs, ensuring they only pay for the support they require. This flexibility can be more cost-effective than hiring full-time help or moving into a care home, especially for those who might only need occasional assistance.
