Singing for the Brain – Home Instead Canary Wharf

A Monthly Oasis of Joy for People Living with Dementia and Their Carers

Singing for the Brain Home Instead Canary Wharf

On the second Tuesday of every month, from 11:00 – 12:00, St. John’s Community Centre in E14 comes alive with song, laughter and camaraderie.

Singing for the Brain, run by Home Instead Canary Wharf in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society, offers people living with dementia and their carers a warm, welcoming space to sing familiar tunes, exercise their voices, and connect with others who truly understand their journey.

Why Singing Matters

Living with dementia can leave individuals feeling isolated or unsure of their place in the world. Numerous studies have demonstrated the powerful effects of singing on the brain and overall wellbeing. When we sing:

  • Neural networks light up: Singing stimulates areas of the brain involved in memory, language and emotion.

  • Stress hormones drop: Engaging in group singing reduces levels of cortisol, helping participants feel calmer and more relaxed.

  • Endorphins surge: The act of singing releases mood-boosting endorphins, promoting happiness and reducing anxiety.

  • We Rekindle Identity: Familiar songs from childhood or younger stages of life can unlock treasured memories, sparking conversation and reminiscence.

  • We Foster Belonging: Sharing a song in harmony creates a profound sense of unity, reminding participants that they are not alone.

  • We Boost Confidence: Learning (or remembering) lyrics and melodies reinforces a sense of achievement and purpose.

For people living with dementia, these benefits translate into improved word recall, sharper energy levels, and a strengthened sense of self. Vocal warm-ups also serve as gentle brain exercises, encouraging concentration, coordination and cognitive agility.

What to Expect at Singing for the Brain by Home Instead Canary Wharf

Held in St. John’s Community Centre, each session balances structure with spontaneity:

  • Warm-up Exercises: Simple breathing and vocal stretches to loosen the diaphragm, lips and jaw.

  • Fun Call-and-Response Games: To spark laughter and boost engagement.

  • Favourite Songs: A mix of classics from musical theatre, wartime ballads and golden-era pop.

  • Group Choices: Carers and participants suggest their personal favourites, ensuring every session feels unique and meaningful.

  • No musical experience required: Every voice adds value, having fun is all that matters.

  • Carers benefit too: The group gives carers a rare hour of respite in a friendly environment, where they can relax, share experiences, and learn new ways to support their loved one’s wellbeing through music.
