Care Pros Ready For When You Need Respite

Being a full-time carer is a very demanding role and, for many caregivers, self-care is often neglected. The strong sense of responsibility that comes with being an unpaid carer makes it easy to put off looking after oneself.

For unpaid carers, sometimes there just aren’t enough hours in the day to do everything. Caring for a friend or family member is a big responsibility, and unpaid carers will need a break from time to time.

When unpaid carers need a break, respite care is the perfect solution. Respite Carers offer a well-needed break for Care Pros. This type of care service provides temporary relief and benefits both the carer and their loved one.

Respite can be an invaluable experience for older adults or people with disabilities. It offers an opportunity for a change of scenery and new social interaction. Furthermore, more significant movement and interaction have been demonstrated to alleviate loneliness and improve the quality of life in older adults, which positively impacts their mental health.

At Home Instead Bristol North, we believe that everyone deserves a bit of time to themselves. That’s why we provide respite care; to give a needed Respite Holiday to carers who need a break from time to time.

We provide this as part of our home care services in and around Bristol, Montpelier, Redland, Westbury and surrounding areas.

What is Respite Care?

Respite care services are designed to give you a break from caring for a family member or friend. There are different types of respite care options available that we can assist with to help give you regular breaks when you need them.

We understand that caring for another person can be physically and mentally demanding, especially when care is provided for long periods of time.

Our Care Pros can safely come to visit your home to look after the person you care for regularly. Respite carers can take them out for a walk to an activity group or day centre for as little or as long as required.

The different types of respite care:

  • Live-in care – for the periods where you may require respite care, a carer lives in your house, offering support and company day and night. This allows you to stay in the familiar surroundings you are comfortable with and out of residential homes.
  • Visiting care – This is Temporary Care. If you only require a bit of extra support for just a few hours each day or each week. We would recommend this type of service for Short-term breaks.

Who can Benefit from Respite Care?

Will respite care affect my carers' allowance?

If you take time off from caring, specific requirements must be followed for you to continue receiving Carer’s Allowance. The basic rule is that you can continue to receive your Carer’s Allowance for up to four weeks in any six months if you have a break from caring.

However, the rules are complicated, so you should get specialist advice.

If you’re receiving any other benefits, including extra amounts for caring, these may be affected if you have a break from caring.
