Mobility and Happiness for the Elderly

We look at the importance of movement and social activity, and how they can be combined to enhance wellbeing for older adults.

Maintaining mobility is vital for everyone’s independence and overall wellbeing. However, many older adults experience a serious decline in basic physical skills, like getting up from a chair, climbing stairs or getting into bed, as a result of inactivity, isolation or, worst of all, a spell in hospital.

We work both with clients and in the broader community to regain these essential skills, helping older people to enjoy a richer, more fulfilling life.

Movement Matters - its More Than Just Exercise

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week. Regular movement can help prevent and manage chronic illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and even certain cancers. Importantly, it also supports mental health and helps maintain a healthy weight.

However, keeping active doesn’t have to mean running marathons or hitting the gym. Simple daily movements, such as gentle stretching, seated exercises or moderate walking outdoors can make a huge difference.

The Power of Moving Together

There is value in shared activity. When exercising in group sessions, or even just with a friend, family member or carer, the benefits are more than physical. Exercising together boosts motivation, fosters friendships and helps improve mental health – research indicates that group activity is strongly linked to enhanced wellbeing and social connection.

Avoiding social isolation is important. Social isolation can trigger chronic stress, which negatively impacts long-term health. By exercising socially, be it through group walks or exercise classes, we help counteract the risks of isolation and thereby build up both physical and psychological resilience.

Exercising with your friend, family member or carer is just as good for them too, and will nurture trust and companionship – and make the sessions that much more enjoyable.
