Wentworth Castle Gardens

With 60 acres of gardens comprising of woodlands, parks and plants surrounding a stately home, Wentworth Castle Gardens is certainly not one to miss. This national trust site was opened in partnership with Barnsley Council and Northern College, offering residential adult education courses whilst the outdoor gardens are opened every day to the public.

These gardens are free to all National Trust members, and just £5 for adults. They offer an ideal place for all to visit with blue badge parking available, as well as the opportunity for ‘essential companions’ of visitors with a disability to receive free admission.

Cannon Hall

Cannon Hall is a country house-turned-museum located just between Cawthorne and High Hoyland that has been said to be, ‘A treasure trove of art, military might, Georgian splendour and Victorian creativity set in rolling countryside, beautiful parkland and intriguing gardens’. Now, similar to Wentworth Castle Gardens, Cannon Hall is owned and operated by Barnsley Council, opening up the grounds to the public with the addition of gift shops, cafes, tours and workshops.

However, unlike the Wentworth gardens, visiting this outdoor space is free-of-charge! They also provide a wide range of ways to be as accessible as possible, catering to visitors who may be blind, deaf, have a learning disability or use a wheelchair. Click here to read more.

Locke Park

A popular park located just a mile from Barnsley’s town centre, Locke Park is a vast, open space that is open all day, every day. In fact, it is one Barnsley’s largest outdoor green spaces where you can easily find a quiet area to yourself.

For days when you may not feel like making a journey in a car, this park is an ideal alternative where you can still enjoy the great outdoors. What’s more, there’s also a café offering refreshments throughout the day, or you are also free to bring your own picnic – making it a great place to have lunch and relax for an hour or two.
