Everyone has a story | Dementia Action Week

According to Alzheimer’s Society, there are nearly 1 million people in the UK living with dementia.

If you or a loved one are affected by dementia, please know, you are not alone. Below you will find the story of our amazing client J. R. and her husband R. R., their life full of adventures, and most importantly, J R’s hobby and passion – creating miniatures.

J and her husband met in the ’60s in Hereford at the Wye Players amateur group. J was responsible for props and R was an actor.  They married in 1970. As a result of work assignments, they lived in America, France and Belgium, moving to Thame in 1986.

Janine worked in the retail shoe industry and finally in a needlecraft shop in Thame where she was able to express her talent. She created samplers for family and friends and started making miniature Quilts 1/ 12 scale.

When J presented some of her Quilts at the Haddenham Dolls House exhibition she was invited to join the Thame Market Town Miniature Club.

Her first club project was to create a scene from one of her favourite storybooks. J chose Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle’s kitchen and started by seeing if she could first make Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle. Once she was satisfied with her creation the rest of the scene was planned and on completion was admired by all who view it.

Since retiring they have travelled the world.  One of their adventures lasted 64 days, where they visited Tokyo, Australia during the Melbourne Commonwealth Games, New Zealand, the Cook Islands and the West Coast of the United States.

From then on, the miniatures you see were created based on her history, loves and world wild travels.

J R was diagnosed in March 2018. In spite of Alzheimer’s, they found a way to visit their sons and grandchildren as often as possible and continue to have the ambition to get the most out of life.
