Emollient Cream Fire Risk

For most, the use of creams and ointments is a daily and much needed occurrence, especially for the elderly, but what about the hidden risks?

Did you know that many commonly used moisturising creams contain paraffin and petroleum bases, which can significantly increase the risk of fire-related injuries and deaths? This is particularly concerning for the elderly, who are more vulnerable to such dangers in their own homes. Alarmingly, flammable skin creams have been linked to the spread of flames across bedsheets and clothing. These creams can seep into fabrics, acting like a wick, allowing flames to spread rapidly. Even washing clothes at high temperatures doesn’t always remove the residue, and using these creams over large areas increases the risk even further.

Fire chiefs are urging everyone, especially caregivers of the elderly, to become more aware of these dangers. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) have joined forces with the NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board (ICB) and Community Pharmacy South Central to launch a safety campaign around the fire risks of emollients. This initiative aims to protect the elderly by providing valuable information and practical tips on minimising these risks. You can view their campaign here and further guidance on protecting yourself and your loved ones here.

To learn more on types of emollients and how to use and apply them safely, please take a look at the NHS guidance, particularly noting there safety advice, NHS Emollients Guidance. Your awareness and action can make a significant difference in protecting the elderly from this hidden danger.
