Meet Bob and Mary who talk about how relationship-led care with Home Instead Altrincham, Sale and Wythenshawe has made all the difference to their quality of life.

Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) is a rare neurological disorder that can cause problems with balance, vision, mobility, coordination, speech, and swallowing. It is often associated with Parkinson’s and Motor Neuron Disease. There are only approximately 4,000 people in the UK living with this condition.

Mary was diagnosed 2 years ago with PSP after a long 18 months of tests with various doctors and specialists. Mary and her husband, Bob, first noticed that Mary’s speech had begun to slur very quickly – symptoms that are synonymous with a stroke. After finding answers at Salford Royal Hospital, Mary and Bob began their journey of living with PSP.

We asked why the couple chose to introduce Home Instead Care Professionals into their life. After Mary had spent 5 weeks in hospital with a blood sugar infection, she was sent home with a commission care package. Mary and Bob found that those 15 and 30 minute calls were not enough time for completing any quality care and there was no opportunity to get to know the staff that they were inviting into their home. After seeing Home Instead literature with our 1-hour minimum calls, regular Care Professionals, and fixed times, Bob and Mary decided to make the change to Home Instead.

Bob told us: “Mary has a small team of Home Instead Care Professionals who she has a built up a bond with. They know Mary’s routine well and actually have the time for a nice chat to start her day off”. He appreciates the Care Professionals they have, as it takes Bob double the time to complete what our team can do and can also leave him feeling quite tired.

When asked what advice they would give to someone else presenting similar symptoms to Mary, Bob recommended them to “Always ask for help. Whether that be to get diagnosed by health care professionals or introduce some home-help or personal care assistance into your daily routines”.
