Five spots for a cuppa in York

We all love a good cuppa, the next time you’re out and about in York with an elderly friend or loved one, why not give one of our favourite spots a try?

When you’re out and about, there’s very few activities as enjoyable as having a nice brew. Whether that’s a quick catch up with friends over one or, an afternoon tea for a special occasion.

As a popular tourist hotspot, York has a thriving café culture, making it the perfect place to visit with elderly relatives or friends.

Deans Bothy

Situated in the popular Deans Garden Centre near Stockton on the Forest, The Bothy is a real favourite amongst York’s older residents. Offering a wonderful selection of sweet treats, speciality tea’s and coffee’s, The Bothy is a wonderful spot for meeting with family or friends.

The Bothy originally built in 1991, has increased in popularity since and was renovated with a new larger coffee shop in 2017. Hosting several events, including ‘Teatime Tuesdays’, Daily Afternoon Tea’ and our very own monthly Companionship Café, there’s several great reasons to pay The Bothy a visit.

There’s no need to book, just turn up and the friendly, welcoming staff will ensure you have a great visit. The café is wheelchair accessible and has ample seating and toilet facilities available.

Bettys Cafe Tea Rooms

A place that doesn’t need any introduction to the residents of York, Bettys Cafe Tea Rooms. Undoubtedly one of the best places to bring your elderly loved one for a memorable afternoon tea. Betty’s dates back to 1919, with the York Café, the fourth of it’s kind at the time, opening it’s doors in 1937.

Bettys, with it’s beautiful interiors inspired by the Queen Margaret Ocean liner, has the finest selection of breakfast and lunch options, cakes and specialty tea’s and coffees. Booking in advance is recommended as queues are common outside, with Betty’s being incredibly popular amongst York’s many day trippers.

No visit to York is complete without a trip to these famous tea rooms!

Aroma of Haxby

Aroma is a coffee shop and café in the heart of bustling town, Haxby, just a few miles north of the centre of York. Aroma serves a great selection of fairtrade tea’s and coffee’s, light lunches and delicious cakes, many of which are homemade by Aroma’s volunteer bakers!

A coffee shop with a difference, any surplus made by Aroma goes towards improving the service they offer to customers and into their ‘Aroma Community Fund’, which is used to provide small grants to local community projects.

With a step-free doorway, Aroma has great accessibility for all, making it the perfect place for a visit with an elderly guest.

The Balloon Tree Farmhouse and Cafe

Located on the outskirts of Stamford Bridge, just a few miles outside of York is The Balloon Tree Farmhouse & Café.

Opening alongside their farmshop in 2004 the Café’s success and popularity has led to two expansions and has remained an increasingly popular spot for the older citizens of York. The Balloon Tree provide their diners with professional service where their team encourage you to put your feet up and relax, taking orders, payments and serving without you having to leave your seat!

You can find The Balloon Tree Farmhouse & Café just off the A166 between Gate Helmsley and Stamford Bridge.

Miss Daisy’s Tea Rooms

A popular family run tearoom situated in Sutton-on Forest, Miss Daisy’s Tea Rooms offers its visitors a warm, welcoming and attentive service. Open for morning coffee, delicious home-cooked lunches, and afternoon tea this is a real favourite amongst Home Instead clients.

Everything served is homemade and locally sourced with an emphasis on quality and taste using family favourite recipes. Miss Daisy’s scones are a bit of a legend locally, with them coming fresh out the oven from 11am each day.

You’ll find Miss Daisy’s Tea Rooms in the picturesque village of Sutton-on-Forest, just five miles outside of York. There’s ample parking a lovely outdoor seating area and disabled access.

York and its surrounding towns and villages have an abundance of brilliant café’s for you to try. Whether it’s for a light bite for lunch after a busy morning shopping or you want to make it the whole purpose of the trip with special afternoon tea celebrations, nothing beats a great cuppa with family and friends.
