The Power of Companionship: How Cooper the Support Dog is Making a Difference

Meet Zoe and Cooper
At Home Instead, we know that companionship comes in many forms, and sometimes, it has four legs and a wagging tail.
We recently spoke with Zoe, one of our dedicated Care Professionals, about her unique companion, Cooper, and the incredible impact he’s having on the clients she supports.
Zoe has been part of the Home Instead family for just over a year, bringing with her a wealth of life experience. From running her own DIY shop for 15 years to working in various caregiving roles, Zoe has always been drawn to helping others.
Alongside her is Cooper, her Cavapoo, who she has lovingly raised since he was a puppy six years ago. Around four months ago, Zoe began introducing Cooper into selected companionship visit, and the results have been truly heart-warming.

A Natural Companion
From an early age, Zoe recognised something special in Cooper. His calm, gentle, and intuitive nature made him ideally suited to supporting others, particularly older adults who may be feeling isolated or missing the presence of a pet.
Zoe took the time to train Cooper herself, ensuring he was comfortable in a variety of situations whether that’s responding calmly to unexpected noises or interacting gently with people who may be more excitable. This careful preparation means Cooper is not only friendly but also safe and reassuring to be around.
Bringing Joy to Every Visit
The reaction from clients has been overwhelmingly positive.
Many clients light up the moment Cooper arrives. His calm presence helps people feel at ease, and he often sits quietly beside them, inviting gentle interaction at their own pace. For those who have previously owned pets, especially dogs, Cooper’s visits can be particularly meaningful.
Zoe shared that clients often feel happier and more relaxed after spending time with him, and in some cases, the impact goes even further.

Supporting Wellbeing in Simple, Powerful Ways
Cooper’s visits aren’t just enjoyable, they can have a real impact on wellbeing.
Zoe has noticed that clients who may be feeling low or disengaged often show improvements after interacting with Cooper. Something as simple as stroking a dog or sharing a quiet moment together can lift mood, reduce anxiety, and even encourage better eating habits.
It’s these small but powerful moments that make such a difference in day-to-day life.

A Thoughtful and Safe Approach
At Home Instead, we always ensure that every aspect of care is tailored and appropriate.
Cooper only attends companionship visits and is not present during personal care. Before any introduction, Zoe carefully considers each client’s preferences, needs, and suitability. In addition, our office team carries out a full risk assessment to ensure the experience is safe and beneficial for everyone involved.

A Local Favourite Making a Meaningful Difference
Cooper has quickly become something of a local celebrity in Steyning!
Zoe laughs that walks often take much longer than planned, as people stop to say hello. Clients frequently remember Cooper’s name—even when they may struggle to recall others—and often ask about him between visits.
Some clients even enjoy giving Cooper treats, especially those who have had dogs themselves. These interactions are always carefully managed, but they add another layer of joy and familiarity to each visit.
For Zoe, the most rewarding part is seeing the smiles Cooper brings.
“Every visit leaves clients in better spirits,” she explains. “He just has a way of connecting with people.”
Cooper has become a valued part of the Home Instead community, demonstrating how companionship, in all its forms, can truly enhance lives.
