Dementia touches the lives of millions of families across the UK, and at Home Instead Wolverhampton, Wombourne and Kingswinford, we’re proud to play an active role in supporting those affected. As part of Dementia UK’s Time for a Cuppa campaign, our team recently hosted a heart-warming tea and cake event at the Tettenhall Institute, bringing the local community together to raise vital funds and awareness.

We’re thrilled to share that the event was a great success, raising £220 for Dementia UK. A huge thank you goes to everyone who attended and generously donated to a cause that’s very close to our hearts.

What Is ‘Time for a Cuppa’?

Every year, Dementia UK runs this brilliant initiative to help families and communities come together over something as simple as a cuppa. Whether it’s in your home, at work, or in a local community space like we did, the idea is simple: make time, share stories, raise funds, and connect.

These funds go directly towards the Admiral Nurse service; dementia specialist nurses who provide life-changing support to families facing dementia. Events like ours help make sure no one feels they have to face this difficult journey alone. We’re proud to collaborate with Dementia UK to offer a better, more complete care service to all our clients living with dementia

Due to the huge success of this event, we’ve decided to host a free-to-attend Friendship and Dementia Café on the last Friday of every month from 10 am to 12 pm at The Institute, Wood Rd, Tettenhall Wood, Wolverhampton WV6 8NF

For information or to book a place please call 01902 745815. See you there!

Spotting the Early Signs of Dementia

While dementia affects everyone differently, being aware of early signs can help you seek the right support sooner. If you’re caring for a loved one, or simply concerned, here are some signs to look out for:

– Memory loss that disrupts daily life (forgetting important dates or repeatedly asking the same question)

– Difficulty planning or solving problems, such as following a recipe or managing bills

– Confusion with time or place, like forgetting where they are or how they got there

– Changes in mood or personality, including increased anxiety, depression or withdrawal

– Struggling with words, especially when speaking or writing

– Poor judgment or decision-making, particularly around money or personal safety

If you notice any of these symptoms, don’t panic – but do seek advice. A GP can carry out a basic assessment or refer you to a specialist memory clinic. The earlier a diagnosis is made, the more support and planning options are available.

Caring for Someone Living with Dementia: Simple but Powerful Tips

Caring for a loved one with dementia can be deeply rewarding, but also incredibly challenging. Here are a few practical ways to make everyday life more comfortable and meaningful:

– Keep routines consistent: Structure helps reduce confusion and anxiety.

– Use visual reminders: Labels, clocks, and calendars can be very helpful.

– Break down tasks: Offer step-by-step guidance with patience and encouragement.

– Communicate calmly: Speak clearly, maintain eye contact, and avoid correcting or arguing.

– Stay active and connected: Gentle walks, music, or reminiscence therapy can boost mood and cognition.

– Look after yourself too: It’s not selfish, it’s essential. Join a support group or ask for information about our respite help.

At Home Instead, our Care Professionals receive specialist training in dementia care, and we tailor our support to each individual’s needs, personality, and preferences – because exceptional care starts with knowing the person, not just the condition.
