Launch of new venue of the Companion Café: An Informative Start to 2026

On Thursday 22nd January marked a positive milestone for Companion Café as Home Instead Wigan hosted their first event of the year at a new venue, at Standard & Berystede Court in Standish. They were delighted to welcome their first speaker of the year Pauline from the Alzheimer’s Society, who delivered a thoughtful and informative talk focused on Alzheimer’s and dementia awareness.
The session provided attendees with a clearer understanding of what Alzheimer’s is, including early signs to look out for, how symptoms may progress over time, and how the condition can affect not only the individual, but also their family and loved ones. Pauline explained these topics in a clear and compassionate way, helping to break down what can often feel like an overwhelming subject. She also provided information on local and national services to aid those, and their families affected by the condition.
A key takeaway from the afternoon was the importance of early awareness and open conversations. Attendees learned how recognising changes early can help people access the right support sooner, while also reducing fear and stigma around dementia. Practical advice was shared on where families can turn for guidance, reassurance, and trusted local support.
The talk also encouraged discussion, with many thoughtful questions from those attending. highlighting how valuable it is to have safe, welcoming spaces where people can learn, share experiences, and feel supported.
It was such a strong turnout for the first Companion Café of 2026, making it a really encouraging start to the year at their new location. Events like these reinforce the importance of community connection, shared learning, and ensuring older adults and their families feel informed, confident, and not alone.
The Companion café will be regularly held at The Standard and Berystede Court on the first Thursday of every month ,1-3pm. It’s a great chance stay informed with local organisations in the community as well as some light activity and free cake and coffee.
