Better Understanding Leads To Better Dementia Care

Knowledge and understanding are vital in our efforts to support those affected by dementia in our local Leeds community.

Dementia Action Week 2024

It’s Dementia Action Week and, as we reflect on this, we are confronted with the fact that we live in a country with an ageing population, and we are currently seeing an increase in countrywide cases of dementia.

This year there has been encouraging progress with breakthroughs in new drugs that will slow the progression of this difficult disease. But for those of us delivering care to those who need it now, we know that knowledge and understanding provide the most important opportunity to reach people, empower them, and create supportive, compassionate communities.

Dementia Action Week 2024 information for Wetherby North Leeds and Horsforth

At Home Instead Wetherby and North Leeds, we’re committed to fostering compassionate communities through free training and support sessions to ensure that support and care are accessible to everyone.

Heather Welsh, Home Instead’s Community Networker and Dementia Friends Ambassador, has been delivering a whole host of training and activity sessions locally for over a decade including:

• Dementia Friends Sessions for the local community to improve knowledge and understanding.
• Monthly Memory Drop In sessions to provide signposting and advice for those affected by dementia and their loved ones with dementia care sector specialists.
• Weekly Chairobics Exercise classes supporting mobility and co-ordination.
• Information Talks supported by specialists on Dementia from Alzheimer’s Society.

Last quarter Heather delivered 10 Dementia Friends Sessions throughout organisations in West Yorkshire including leading superstores, Morrisons, Tesco’s and GP surgeries, to upskill their team, enhance their understanding, and be able to provide more dementia friendly focused services.
