Singing for the Brain at Clevedon Community Centre

Home Instead Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon and Burnham-on-Sea is welcoming local people to its Singing for the Brain sessions at Clevedon Community Centre. Music has a way of reaching people that ordinary conversation sometimes cannot, bringing back a memory, easing anxiety, or simply making an afternoon feel lighter. For people living with dementia, and for those who love and support them, that kind of connection can make a real difference to the day.

This blog looks at what the sessions involve, who can come along, and why music matters so much for people living with dementia.

What Is Singing for the Brain?

Singing for the Brain is a programme developed by the Alzheimer’s Society that uses group singing to bring people together in a relaxed, sociable setting. It is not about performance or musical ability. It is simply about being in a room with others, sharing familiar songs, and enjoying an afternoon of connection.

Sessions are open to people living with dementia, those who support a loved one, and anyone in the community who would like to come along. There is no expectation and no pressure. Every session is shaped around the people in the room.

What to Expect at a Session

Our sessions are held every second Tuesday of the month, from 2pm to 4pm at Clevedon Community Centre, 2 Princes Road, Clevedon. Each session is relaxed and informal, with a welcoming space full of familiar faces and new ones, group singing of well-known songs, and music that encourages movement and participation at whatever level feels comfortable.

There is plenty of time to chat, share a laugh, and enjoy some company, all within a supportive atmosphere suitable for people living with dementia and their carers. The first session was described by those who attended as full of laughter, singing, dancing, and lovely conversation, and that sets the tone for everything that follows.

Who Can Come Along?

These sessions are open to everyone. Whether you are living with dementia, caring for someone who is, or simply looking for a friendly and sociable afternoon out, you will be welcomed with open arms.

Carers and family members are encouraged to attend alongside their loved ones. The sessions are designed to be enjoyable for both, and the informal setting means there is no pressure to participate in any particular way.

If you are based in Clevedon, Weston-super-Mare, Yatton, Congresbury, or the surrounding areas, these sessions are a straightforward and accessible way to spend a Tuesday afternoon in good company.

Why Music Matters for People Living With Dementia

Research has shown that music can have a meaningful effect on people living with dementia. Familiar songs from earlier in life can trigger long-term memories, reduce agitation, and encourage people to engage and communicate in ways that other activities sometimes do not.

Group singing adds a social dimension to that. Being in a room with others, sharing something enjoyable, and feeling part of a community can ease feelings of isolation and bring a sense of warmth and familiarity that is hard to replicate elsewhere. The effect often lasts beyond the session itself, with people leaving in better spirits and with something to look forward to next time.
