Explore gentle, senior-friendly outdoor activities along the Somerset coast this summer with Home Instead.
As June brings longer days and milder weather, it’s a wonderful time to step outside and enjoy nature, especially for older adults who benefit from home care. So, what are the best outdoor activities for seniors in Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon and Burnham-on-Sea? The answer lies in thoughtful, accessible experiences that offer enjoyment without pressure: a peaceful picnic by Marine Lake, painting by the dunes in Berrow, or sharing lunch at a sunny café in Clevedon. These gentle activities help older adults stay active and connected, with the support of a Care Professional if needed.
This blog explores a variety of inclusive outdoor options along Somerset’s coast, from relaxing walks and creative hobbies to scenic picnic spots and community events, perfect for older adults and their companions this summer.
Paul, Client of Home Instead Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon & Burnham-on-Sea for 3 years really enjoys outing with his Care Pros. Paul is lucky enough to live in the middle of the glorious Weston-super-Mare and enjoys going out with her Care Pro companions throughout the year, come rain or shine. So far this summer season they have enjoyed meals out in local parks and beauty spots such as The Prince Consort Gardens which has amazing views of Weston sea front, Flatholm Island and Steepholm Island. There is a short circular pathway around a well established fish pond, and plenty of benches to choose from to sit and admire the view. Well worth a visit if you haven’t been before!
Paul has also enjoyed outings with his Care Pro companions, taking advantage of the lovely weather and dining outdoors at one of our many local cafes. Muffins Tea Rooms, situated on Worle High Street is a local favourite, and even picked up a local award for ‘Cafe of The Year’ in 2024! Muffins is a great spot to ‘people watch’ and enjoy a hearty lunch, or coffee and cake. They often supply our Office Team with their lunches too; so we can safely say you won’t be disappointed.
Marine Lake on Weston’s seafront is a safe, enclosed space perfect for gentle waterside strolls or relaxed picnics. When the tide is out, the lake remains full thanks to a tidal barrier, making it ideal for those who’d like to paddle, enjoy sea breezes, or simply watch the world go by.
There are benches all around the lake and flat paths suitable for mobility aids. Bring a thermos and a few favourite snacks and you’ve got the ingredients for a peaceful, accessible outing.
Grove Park is a quiet green space in the centre of town. Well-maintained paths, accessible toilets, and seasonal flower displays make it a lovely place to spend an afternoon. Within it, Jill’s Garden, created in memory of local presenter Jill Dando, is a beautiful spot to sit and chat.
Local care clients often visit with companions for a gentle walk followed by refreshments from one of the nearby cafés. During July, you might even spot local artists setting up easels, as this park is a popular place for informal landscape painting.
Clevedon’s seafront is wonderfully level and ideal for a stroll with walking frames or wheelchairs. The Victorian pier remains a visual highlight, and the promenade offers plenty of places to stop and rest.
The Marine Lake is also a lovely area for seated picnics. Older adults who enjoy watching swimmers or wildlife will appreciate the calm environment. Bring along sketchpads or watercolours and make the most of the inspiring sea views.
For those who enjoy a cup of tea with a sea breeze, Hill Road has a selection of quiet cafés with outdoor seating. Salthouse Fields nearby has shaded areas, flat paths and a relaxed atmosphere, an ideal spot for carers and clients to unwind during the warmer months.
Apex Park is a local favourite among older adults and caregivers. It features wide, flat paths ideal for wheelchairs and mobility scooters, alongside duck ponds and picnic tables. It’s a calm space where people of all ages come to enjoy light walking, birdwatching, or a friendly conversation.
July often sees the local community arranging casual outdoor meetups, and there’s no shortage of green space for a picnic with a friend or care companion.
Burnham’s long seafront promenade makes it easy to walk or wheel alongside the sand. While access to the beach itself can be limited in places, there are designated areas with ramps. Many benches offer opportunities to rest and enjoy the sea air. Don’t forget to bring a camera, this stretch of coastline is known for dramatic skies and beautiful sunsets.
The National Trust-managed Brean Down offers a gently challenging walk with spectacular views, but it’s the Brean Down Café at the base that’s a popular gathering spot. The café has outdoor seating, friendly service, and even dog-friendly menus.
The Brean Down Circular Walk is a 3-mile option best suited to those who can manage longer outings with support. For a shorter experience, a stroll around the café area or a few moments enjoying the view can be just as rewarding.
The Berrow Beach Circular is a flatter option for walking and includes interesting landmarks such as the wreck of the Nornen. There’s shaded woodland and open dune paths, and it’s an ideal choice for a guided walk or companion outing. As the route is tidal, it’s important to check tide times in advance to stay safe.
For older adults who enjoy painting or drawing, the Somerset coast offers dozens of locations perfect for capturing the beauty of nature. Whether it’s a detailed sketch of the Grand Pier or a simple watercolour of the waves, creating art outdoors can be both calming and stimulating.
Caregivers and companions can help by setting up seating, materials, and refreshments. Local parks like Grove Park in Weston and Apex Park in Burnham often have quiet corners ideal for this sort of activity. Some local community groups even organise informal painting meetups, check the Home Instead WOW Guide or local library for updates.
Nothing brings people together quite like food, and dining outdoors is a lovely way for older adults to stay social and enjoy the summer.
Accessible picnic spots can be found at:
Many of these sites include nearby toilets and flat walking paths, making them suitable for visitors using mobility aids or attending with carers.
Community centres and care groups often host BBQs and outdoor lunch events during the summer. These provide an opportunity to enjoy good food in good company, ideal for care clients who benefit from regular social interaction.
