Why We’re Doing It

As the festive season approaches, we’re delighted to announce the return of our annual “Be A Santa To A Senior” initiative for 2025. Once again, we’re inviting our community across West Lothian to come together to share kindness and bring a thoughtful gift to older adults who might otherwise miss out on the joy of Christmas.

There are many older people locally who face loneliness, isolation, or limited means during the festive period. At Home Instead, we believe everyone deserves to feel remembered – and even a simple gift can bring warmth and connection.

What began in 2020 as a small gesture of kindness has grown into something truly special. Over the past five years, the Be A Santa To A Senior campaign has shared gifts and goodwill with more than 1,700 older people across West Lothian – all thanks to the amazing generosity of our community.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Where can I donate a gift?

Please see our list of collection points above or visit our Amazon Wish-List to purchase one online

Who will receive the donations?

Vulnerable older people in West Lothian that will be alone or otherwise unlikely to receive a present over the Christmas period. These individuals have been identified by local charities, community groups and other organisations and are not Home Instead clients.

Why older people?

Home Instead are specialists in supporting older adults, and this campaign allows us to extend that care beyond our own clients – bringing smiles to many seniors across West Lothian who might otherwise spend Christmas alone.

Which community groups are involved?

In previous years, we’ve partnered with Food Train, OPAL Cyrenians West Lothian, Spark, Kirk of Calder, Dedridge Good Neighbour Network, Polbeth Harwood Parish Church, The Rosebery Centre, Livingston United Parish Church, Ladywell Neighbourhood Network, Tippethill Hospital, and the West Lothian 50 Plus Network.

Each year, we aim to expand our reach. If you know of a local organisation or group that supports older people who may be isolated or over 65 and unlikely to receive a gift, please encourage them to contact us.

What gifts are most suitable?

Gifts that could be suitable for either a man or a woman are preferred where possible. However, donations of any item(s) that an elderly person might appreciate would be welcomed.

This could include things such as toiletries, confectionary, jigsaws, puzzle books, or hats, gloves and scarves. For inspiration, please see our Amazon wish-list which has a selection of gifts to choose from.

Should the gifts be wrapped?

Please leave donations unwrapped, as our volunteers will wrap and label them once we match each to a suitable recipient.

When do people need to donate by?

The final date for collection-point donations is Friday 12th December 2025. The deadline for Amazon Wish-List orders is Monday 8th December 2025 to allow time for delivery.

What happens after the gifts have been donated?

All donations are collected at our Livingston office, sorted, wrapped, and distributed through our partner organisations so that every gift reaches an older person in time for Christmas.

How else can I get involved?

Help us to spread the word about the campaign locally by sharing this blog or our social media posts with friends, family or colleagues.

We are also interested in hearing from local organisations and groups that either may be able to help us identify elderly people that are isolated or vulnerable that would benefit from receiving a gift, or local businesses that may be willing to support the campaign by donating gifts and/or hosting collection points.
