"I Wanted to Do Something That Mattered." How Steph Swapped Retail for a Career in Care

Home Instead Watford's Stephanie Turner

You know that feeling on the drive home after a long shift?

You’re tired. You’ve been on your feet all day. You’ve handled difficult customers, kept the team together, hit your numbers and done it all with a smile. But somewhere between the car park and your front door, a quiet little thought creeps in.

Is this it?

If you’ve ever had that thought, you’re not alone. And if you’ve ever wondered whether there’s a career out there that uses everything you’re good at, but truly gives you a feeling of purpose, then we’d love you to meet Steph.

A Decade in Retail and Unexpected Career Change

Steph knows the retail world inside out. She spent ten years working in the hair and beauty industry, with well-known trade names Salon Services and Sally Beauty, working her way up, building teams, and becoming someone people relied on.

“I had a lot of progression whilst I was there,” she says. “I was good at what I did. But I started to feel like something was missing.”

She loved her colleagues and was brilliant with customers, however the relentless pace, targets and a sense that at the end of every day she was measuring success in sales figures, all started to feel hollow.

She just didn’t quite know what to do about it.

The Conversation That Made Her Look at Home Care Jobs

When one of Steph’s stores closed and her team were made redundant, it was a hard time for everyone. Yet as these things sometimes go, it ended up being the moment that changed everything, just not in the way she expected.

One of her colleagues went on to become a mental health support worker and a few weeks later, they caught up over a cup of tea.

“She was talking about her new job,” Steph recalls, “and the way she described it, I just couldn’t stop thinking about it. She could see the difference she was making in people’s lives, every single day. And I remember sitting there thinking: I want that. I want to do something that gives me purpose.”

Not long after, Steph spotted a job advert for a care role. She took a deep breath, and she applied.

That was three years ago and she hasn’t looked back once.

"I didn't feel like I was starting over." Why Retail Skills Translate So Well to Home Care

One of the things Steph wants anyone considering this career change to know, is that she didn’t walk through the door as a blank slate, and you won’t either.

Everything she’d learned in retail, from how to really listen to someone, how to stay calm when things get difficult or how to make a person feel looked after, all translated into the role in care and became the foundation of what makes her brilliant at the job.

“In retail, you spend so much time learning how to read people,” she says. “You learn patience. You learn how to handle hard moments and how to be there for your team. I use all of that, every single day, just now, it’s for something that really matters.”

The shift isn’t about starting from scratch, but more about taking everything you’ve built and pointing it in a direction that feels meaningful.

The Moments That Make Home Care Unlike Any Other Career

Ask Steph about her favourite moments in care, and she doesn’t hesitate.

One of our wonderful live-in clients here in Watford, the incredible Mrs K, was celebrating her 101st birthday. Steph and her care manager went out and chose a beautiful flower basket, and delivered it with a handmade card.

“She was so thankful for such a small gesture,” Steph says, her voice softening. “To this day, she still talks about it to her live-in carers. And because she’s always been so passionate about her garden, she’s kept that basket thriving.”

That’s the kind of moment you take home with you after a busy day, which really makes it all worthwhile.
