Care Professional Jobs in Watford: Your Questions Answered

Whether you’re already working in home care or thinking about a complete change of direction, it’s natural to have questions before you take the next step. Our Home Instead Watford team have pulled together the things people ask us most, from how the hours work to what the role really feels like day to day.
Working Hours and Contracts
What do flexible hours mean?
Flexible hours means your working pattern can be built around your life, to include mornings, evenings, weekends, or a combination that suits you. Many of our Watford Care Professional team work school-friendly hours, fitting visits around the morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. Anila is one of our fantastic team, who did just that and joined us so that she could have a balance with family life. You can read her story here.
What we ask is that whatever pattern you choose, you offer it consistently. The people we support in Watford and the surrounding areas of Bushey, Croxley Green, Northwood and surrounds, rely on seeing a familiar face at a reliable time.
If I’m on a zero hours contract, how will availability work?
Our Watford recruitment team, alongside the care management team will have a detailed conversation about what hours suit you, and we build your schedule around that availability, which means keeping those agreed slots free on your end. We know life can be busy, so we work hard to get the balance right from the start, rather than asking you to be permanently on call. Consistency matters just as much to our clients as it does to you.
How many hours will I get?
This depends on the contract that suits you. We offer guaranteed hours at 16, 20 and 30 hours a week for those who need a reliable monthly income, and flexible contracts from around 10 to 12 hours for those fitting care around other commitments. This approach has worked really well for many of our Care Professionals including Meakah who is a student nurse studying at City University. You can read her story here.
We start your shifts off steadily so you have time to get comfortable with our clients and our way of working, before your schedule builds out. Pay starts from £14.50 to £16.50 per hour.
Can I work school term time only?
This isn’t something we’re able to offer, and it comes down to the people we support. Our clients across Watford and the surrounding area rely on seeing the same Care Professional week in, week out, throughout the year, and that continuity is central to the way we work. Our schedulers will work very closely with you to organise your leave when you need it, and we’ll always be as accommodating as we can. Most of our team are parents themselves, and our schedulers genuinely understand the juggle.
Is there a minimum number of hours I have to commit to?
We ask that you’re available at least three to four days a week, and that you can keep to a consistent shift pattern across those days. This is really important to the people that you’ll be visiting. Our clients across Watford and the surrounding area build real relationships with their Home Instead Care Professionals, and turning up at a predictable time matters to them. If your availability changes down the line, we will always work with you to ensure that we can balance your time with the needs of our clients.
Getting Started as a Care Professional
What qualifications do I need?
None at all. We recruit based on character, not certificates. What matters to us is that you’re kind, reliable, and genuinely interested in spending time with older people – everything else we’ll teach you. Many of our Watford team came to us from completely different backgrounds, including retail, hospitality and education, and have gone on to build long careers in care. We also have a mix of ages in our team and as an age friendly employer we are strong advocates that age really is just a number. If you have existing experience or qualifications, that’s great, but it won’t give you a head start over someone with the right values and none.

What happens after I apply?
One of our Watford recruitment team will be in touch, usually within the same day to arrange for an informal phone or video call. It’s a two-way conversation to understand what you’re looking for, what hours suit you, and what’s drawing you to care, and you’ll have the chance to ask anything you want about the role. If we both feel it’s a good fit, we’ll invite you to meet the team at our Watford office. There’s no panel interview, no pressure, just a chance to get to know each other properly before anyone makes a decision.
Will I get a DBS check and who pays for it?
Yes, all Care Professionals at Home Instead Watford are required to have an Enhanced DBS check before they begin working with clients. We arrange and pay for this in full, and there’s nothing to pay back if you ever decide to leave. The Enhanced check is the most thorough level available and covers both the children’s and adults’ barred lists, which reflects the level of trust our clients place in the people coming into their homes.
Your Training at Home Instead Watford
What will training be like?
You’ll start with two fully paid days of face-to-face training at our Watford office, for our Welcome Home introduction, covering everything from how Home Instead works to how to deliver care to the highest standard. There’s also online learning you can complete at home, and that’s paid too. As you settle in, you’ll have access to specialist training in Parkinson’s, stoma and catheter care, and baseline observations. We see training as something that grows with you, not a box ticked on day one, so there are also refreshers and ongoing training throughout your career with us.

What the Role Looks Like Day to Day
Will I wear a uniform?
No. At Home Instead Watford it’s so important to us that our home care services are dignified and discrete. You’ll wear your own clothes, with just a simple Home Instead lanyard for ID, but to anyone passing the gate, you could be a friend popping in, a neighbour dropping off shopping, or a relative round for a cup of tea. We wear PPE where appropriate, but you will never see us putting this on outside a clients home.
How far will I be expected to travel?
We keep you in and around your local area. Watford and its surrounding neighbourhoods across Bushey, Croxley Green, Stanmore, Rickmansworth and Kings Langley, make up the bulk of where our clients are, and we build your visits to keep your route logical rather than criss-crossing the area. There’s 15 minutes of paid travel time built into your schedule between each client.
