One family shared how worried they were about finding someone who could manage their dad’s new ileostomy, someone with the right clinical skill and real compassion. Before Home Instead, they weren’t sure who to trust. But when our professional started caring for him, everything changed. Their expertise in ileostomy care transformed his confidence, and the calm reassurance they brought into the home gave the entire family real peace of mind. As they said, “They truly gave us our quality of life back.”

We recognise how important community connection is for anyone adjusting to life with a stoma. That’s why we offer friendly, informal meet-ups where people living with a colostomy, ileostomy or urostomy can share experiences, ask questions and feel understood. As part of the wider community initiatives across our network, our own Stoma Support Group is hosted by our care owner, Tony O’Flaherty. These relaxed sessions provide a safe space for clients, families and care professionals to talk openly and find reassurance.

These services ensure comfort for anyone living with a stoma at home.
Leaks and skin irritation are prevented by ensuring the stoma appliance fits correctly and by following a consistent care routine. Our Care Professionals accurately measure and cut the baseplate so it fits snugly around the stoma, creating a secure seal that stops output from reaching the skin. They also clean and dry the peristomal area thoroughly during each change and follow a regular schedule so adhesives don’t weaken or stay on for too long. These steps together greatly reduce the risk of leaks and irritation.

You will likely have been advised at the time of your surgery whether it would be a temporary measure or a permanent one. Stoma reversal is a common procedure for certain types of stoma, with some unable to be reversed. Many people do feel having a stoma often significantly improves quality of life due to the reduction or removal of the symptoms which lead to the surgery. Any stoma care will last only as long as it is required.
While initially it may take some getting used to, adjusting to living with your stoma bag can minimise disruptions and improve your quality of life. Stoma care can help you recover your independence after surgery so that you can continue doing the things you love.
Yes, it’s fine to have a bath or shower with a stoma, either with your stoma bag on or off. You may prefer having your bag on during a bath just in case your stoma is active and any leaks occur.
Many people are concerned that others will notice a smell from a stoma, but there should only ever be an odour from your stoma when your Care Professional is changing or emptying your bag. If there’s an unpleasant smell while the bag is in place, this might mean there is a leak, or the bag may be faulty. If you’re worried about odours from your stoma bag, your clinical team or your Care Professional will be able to give you help and advice.
