Dementia Friends Information Session

One in three people born in the UK today will find themselves caring for someone with dementia at some point in their lifetime. Despite these startling statistics, most of us have never learned how to support someone living with this condition, not in school, not at work, nowhere.

That’s about to change for our Wandsworth, Lambeth, and Dulwich community.

On Tuesday, 25th February at 10:30 am, we’re hosting a free Dementia Friends Training session at the Carnegie Library Hub. This session could transform how you see and support the thousands of people with dementia in our neighbourhoods.

What Makes Someone a Dementia Friend?

A Dementia Friend isn’t a carer or a healthcare professional. They’re ordinary people who’ve taken an hour to understand what it’s like to live with dementia and learned simple ways to help. It might be giving someone a bit more time at the checkout, speaking clearly and calmly, or simply offering a friendly smile when someone seems confused.

Currently, nearly one million people in the UK are living with dementia, and that number touches countless families and communities. Awareness changes how people are met in everyday life with patience and kindness instead of pressure & confusion.

About the Dementia Friends Session

Dementia Friends was created by Alzheimer’s Society to help anyone learn about dementia and the small ways you can help. Our session will be friendly, informal and interactive and completely free. You’ll meet local families and professionals and explore five simple messages that help explain what dementia is and how it affects everyday life.

We want to create awareness about dementia through this activity. Dementia Friends is about learning more about dementia so people can help their community and raise awareness, helping those living with dementia continue to live in the way they want.

Our interactive session will help you:

  • Understand what dementia is and how it affects daily life
  • Recognise the challenges someone with dementia might face in everyday situations
  • Learn practical ways to support people living with dementia in your community
  • Feel more confident if you encounter someone who may need a helping hand

Whether you know someone with dementia or just want to be ready to help, this session is for you. You don’t need any prior knowledge or experience. Just bring an open mind and a willingness to learn.
