WELCOME TO OUR MAY 2024 NEWSLETTER

Welcome to the latest issue of Older Wiser Together (OWT)

The aim of OWT is to become a trusted and valued part of our community, particularly for those aged 50 or over who may be looking for new opportunities, social events, and challenges, as well as tips for independent living. We cover from Bude, Launceston, Callington, Holsworthy, Okehampton, Tavistock, Saltash and Torpoint.  We hope you’ll find useful information on initiatives and activities in your area.

We always welcome feedback, constructive criticism, and submissions for OWT, particularly from those of you with professional or charitable links to our community. Do get in touch if you have something you’d like to share. Please feel free to forward this Newsletter to family, friends, and colleagues.

Best wishes,

Our Mission

Our mission is so important to us.  This refreshed mission was developed by consulting with all our staff. The enriching of lives and bringing joy is different for all of us and as you may have read in our client case studies. Building trust with a client over a period of time and enabling a client to regain independence or join in a simple activity again is hugely rewarding to our staff and of course to the client and their family.

Think Dementia

The Alzheimer’s Society has created a useful checklist for families to help identify possible signs and symptoms of dementia.  This checklist can help families to clearly communicate symptoms and concerns they may have, particularly during a time pressured doctor’s appointment or meeting with any health or social care professional. This combined with a historical medical picture can help a GP towards the correct diagnosis.

Attendance Allowance and Council Tax Discount

Did you know that there is a non means tested benefit that can be applied for?  Attendance Allowance is extra money if you have a long-term physical or mental condition or disability. It doesn’t matter what your condition is – what matters is how it affects you. If you’ve reached State Pension age and need help with personal care, or need support to check you’re ok, you may be eligible. If you qualify for attendance allowance and have a dementia diagnosis you may also be able to apply for a discount on your council tax.

Tech Tip

Although we have recommended helpful tech products to our clients in the past, we have just seen a product called the Relish Day Hub – Dementia Reminder Clock. The Relish Day Hub is a simplified Dementia Clock with a personalised Task Manager that can help to reduce anxiety around time and remembering essential daily tasks, helping the user to maintain their level of independence at home for longer.  The clock can be personalised to suit personal needs and preferences.

Live-in Care

Live-in care involves a specially chosen Care Professional moving into their client’s home. They provide companionship and practical support throughout the day, enabling that person to continue living the life they have always known and doing the things they enjoy the most. Families have peace of mind knowing there is someone supporting their loved one on an ongoing basis, not only providing daily support but company too. We know that finding care isn’t easy. With so many options and choices, it can be hard to know where to turn. But our care begins with you. By spending more time listening and understanding your circumstances than anyone else, we’re confident we can help you get through it. So give us a call and we’ll help you find the answer, with no pressure to make a decision right away.
