Our team at Home Instead have put together our top 3 locations in and around Bude for adventures out with a senior. Getting out and about in your local area is a great way to stay engaged, active and happy in senior years.

Getting out for some fresh air, social interaction, and exercise, is crucial for our mental and physical health and it is so important to remain connected; especially to our older loved ones, whom we so often take for granted. Going out to explore a new area, or try a new activity, is a great way to bring some fun and excitement into your life. Here are some of our favourites around Bude!

  1. Bude Sea Pool

If you are feeling brave, Bude Sea Pool is the perfect place for a quick dip! It’s an absolutely gorgeous location on the beach. Free of charge, and ranked Bude’s Number One attraction, it would make sense if it was on the top of your bucket list. We would recommend going with a friend or two, with a flask of tea or hot chocolate. Once you’ve been for your swim, get back into your layers, have a cup of tea and warm up looking out to the sea from the beach.

There are a number of stairs to get to and into the pool so just be aware of that, and it definitely isn’t warm. Summer might be the best bet for your first dip, when the water has warmed a bit from the sun. It’s up to you if you dare in winter!

  1. Bude Castle

If swimming is off the cards, Bude Castle is an elegant and history-laden building overlooking Summerleaze Beach. Inside, there is a heritage centre, several art galleries and café, where cream tea and scones are a must.

The galleries have been open to the public since 2017 and are all curated to support and celebrate local artists and crafts people from the West Country. The main galleries are on the first floor of the Castle, which can be accessed by lift if you are unable to negotiate stairs.

It’s worth checking out their events calendar as they often run workshops and music events that would also make a fun day or evening out.

  1. Bude Farmer’s and Craft Market

Friday in Bude would not be complete without taking a stroll around the Farmers Market between 10am – 3pm. From delicious local cakes and pastries to craft shops with knitted teddies, handmade cards and gifts, there is a lot to look at (and try)! It’s the perfect place to go to support and get to know local traders and the wider community.

The Farmers Market is located on the wharf, which is a flat large space, meaning that it is easily accessible for those in wheelchairs.
