Palliative care is as much about emotional comfort as it is about physical support. When a family in Sutton contacted us to help care for their mum, who was no longer able to leave her bed, we ensured that every visit brought not only practical help but also thoughtful companionship. Her care professional soon learned that she had always loved art, and went on a mission to gather a collection of colouring books from Waterstones. Together, they spent quiet afternoons creating colourful pictures, turning a difficult time into one filled with her favourite hobby. These simple moments of connection are at the heart of our palliative care, because doing the things that make us happy still matter.

Providing palliative care takes more than skill; it takes compassion and a genuine desire to provide the best quality of life for those we support. At Home Instead Sutton, we’ve built a team culture that values meaningful friendships between care professionals and clients, led by our Registered Care Manager, Alison Legg. With over 15 years in care, Alison ensures every relationship begins with understanding and trust. As she says, “When we take time to connect with someone, it transforms the care we provide.” This heartfelt approach has helped us form lasting partnerships with local families and earned us recognition as runners-up in the Sutton Business Awards. It’s care that’s not only professional, but truly personal.
Even during the most challenging times, staying connected to the community can provide comfort and a sense of belonging. At Home Instead Sutton, we support local initiatives that make a meaningful difference, not just for older adults, but for their families too. We often refer families to Age UK Sutton, which offers inclusive activities and emotional support groups, as well as the Sutton Carers Centre, where regular coffee mornings and advice sessions provide a safe space to share and seek guidance. Whether it’s quiet companionship at home or gentle involvement in the community, we believe palliative care should help families feel supported, understood, and never alone.

Not necessarily. While palliative care can include end of life care, it is certainly not always the case and can last for a longer period of time. Some people are able to live comfortably for many years while receiving palliative care. The focus is always providing support as you need it to allow you to carry on with your daily life within the limits of your condition.
Our Care Professionals understand that maintaining your control over your daily life is important. Depending on what care you need for your condition you may need help with a few things or more help with a lot of your usual tasks. The level of help required is likely to change over time, but Home Instead will be there to ensure you keep as your independence for as long as possible.
During your illness you may receive successful treatment from your clinical team. Depending on the outcome of this treatment you may no longer require palliative care, however it may be beneficial to continue for a short while. During the recovery process it can be beneficial to you and your loved ones to have some relief from the physical and emotional stress a serious illness can cause.
