We are not alone in remembering our past and there are groups out there in our local area that are collecting our histories and helping us keep it alive.
In and around Sutton and Morden there are many people striving to collect and safekeep our local and individual histories, keeping it alive with talks and exhibitions. As we got older it can be hard to recall these memories on our own, why not take the time and join one of these events and bring those memories to life.
Sutton Historians
The Sutton Historians is a new local history group, open to people of all ages and abilities. they are giving talks on the local history of the are on the last Friday of each month at 2pm,
At the end of each talk, they have time for people to stay, make use of the library and discuss the local history of Sutton. Whether you are an amateur historian, or simply interested in finding out more about your local area, they would love to have you come down.
The Sutton Historians will be based in Whitehall Historic House, Honeywood Museum, and the Sutton Archives.
Sutton Central Library Gallery & Family History Centre
Sutton Central Library is a building with that was previously underutilised, it has now been transformed, as well as the library, the space now includes an art gallery and museum. Past exhibitions & displays include:
- Remembering The Royal Female Orphanage,
- Weddings of the past and memories for the future,
- Reminiscence of Hong Kong,
- local artists
Merton Memory Bank Project
Discover Merton’s past using memory boxes with a range of objects, images, smells and sounds. Available for use by individual visitors and groups living with dementia.
Located in Morden Library, Merton Civic Centre, the project provides a range of activities and support for local residents living with dementia. Trained volunteers will assist with the reminiscence and craft sessions, enabling people living with dementia to share their memories, learn and interact with others.
Our past is something that is still shaping our future and keeping it alive for the next generation is a never ending task that more and more people are taking part in. Sharing our memories and photos can open a new world to those around us and help us keep it alive in our minds.
