When the sun goes down...

You’re at home, there’s nothing on the TV. Or maybe you have a birthday and you want to celebrate. What can St Albans offer?

The Odyssey Cinema, London Road, St Albans

Forget the sterile multi screen cinemas in retail parks and shopping centres, this cinema is pure nostalgia!  The cinema dates back to 1908 – so is a real part of St Albans history.   It’s had more name changes than Elizabeth Taylor….  The Alpha Picture Palace, The Poly Picture Palace, The Capital and The Odeon before closing its doors in the 1990s.

It was purchased by an in a derelict state in 2010 and a huge local campaign then raised money to restore it into a 1930s style cinema.

The top floor is set out in a more traditional style – rows of seating, However, I always opt for downstairs seating, where the seats are set out in small groups all around round tables (2-5 seats).

They have a drinks licence, so you can enjoy a beer, wine or cider.  They of course also serve hot and cold soft drinks.  The food menu veers away from the modern cinema, with cheese plates, olives and falafel with humous.  You can of course also get popcorn, ice-cream and sweets.

Films change daily and they usually have a film on at mid-day and one in the evening.  They have both new releases and old classics, on Monday the films are themed with musicals, showing classics like Singin’ in the Rain.   The cinema is popular, and so its recommended to book in advance.  Odyssey
