World Alzheimer’s Month: Words of Wisdom from Our Care Professionals

September marks World Alzheimer’s Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness, challenging stigma, and showing support for those living with Alzheimer’s and their families.

September marks World Alzheimer’s Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness, challenging stigma, and showing support for those living with Alzheimer’s and their families. At Home Instead South Manchester, our Care Professionals play an important role in supporting individuals with dementia to live safely and comfortably in their own homes.

This year, we wanted to share their voices – their advice, their experiences, and their reflections on why caring for people with dementia means so much to them.

Advice for Families

Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s can be both rewarding and challenging. Our Care Professionals wanted to reassure families that there is no perfect way – only the way that works best for you and your loved one.

Olivia shared:

“Trust your instincts – you know your loved one best. There’s no ‘wrong way’ to care, and even on difficult days, you’re doing amazing.”

Carol also highlighted the importance of routine and patience:

“Continuity of care is so important. It allows relationships to grow and helps your loved one feel safe and supported. Reassurance, reminders, and patience can make all the difference.”

The Joy of Caring

While Alzheimer’s brings many challenges, our Care Professionals also spoke about the special moments of joy that come with their role.

Carol explained:

“It’s so rewarding to help someone feel safe and happy at home – seeing fear turn into a smile is truly special.”

Why It’s Meaningful

For many of our team, supporting those with dementia is more than just a job – it’s a calling.
As Sarah beautifully put it:

“Supporting people with dementia reminds me how precious life is and to treasure every moment.”

Standing Together

World Alzheimer’s Month is a reminder that dementia affects not only individuals, but families and communities. By listening to those who care daily for people with Alzheimer’s, we can all gain a better understanding of the challenges – and the moments of hope – that come with it.

At Home Instead South Manchester, we are committed to providing compassionate, person-centred care that helps people living with dementia maintain independence and dignity in the place they feel most comfortable: their own home.
