Join Home Instead South Manchester this September as we raise awareness, share stories, and support those living with dementia across our local community.

September marks World Alzheimer’s Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness, sharing stories, and supporting those living with dementia. At Home Instead South Manchester, we’re proud to stand alongside families, care professionals, and the wider community in recognising this important month. This year, our team is not only reflecting on the impact of Alzheimer’s but actively taking part through events, personal stories, and local partnerships. From attending awareness sessions to showcasing heartfelt experiences from our care professionals and clients, we’re shining a light on dementia in a way that feels real and local. Whether it’s a care professional sharing their family’s journey or an event we’ve attended here in South Manchester, our aim is to make dementia a visible part of the conversation this September.

In this blog, we’ll explore what World Alzheimer’s Month means, why 2025 holds special significance, and how our South Manchester team is taking action. We’ll also share practical ways you can get involved, along with inspiring stories from those affected.

What Is World Alzheimer’s Month?

World Alzheimer’s Month is a global campaign that takes place every September, culminating in World Alzheimer’s Day on the 21st. Launched by Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI), the campaign aims to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that continues to surround dementia.

It’s a worldwide reminder that dementia is not only a personal or family experience. It touches entire communities, health systems, and economies. According to Alzheimer’s Society, dementia is now the leading cause of death in the UK, yet still lacks the funding, focus, and care infrastructure it urgently requires.

In 2025, the campaign’s message is clear: let’s bring dementia into the open. Let’s listen to those affected. And let’s work together to improve understanding and care.

Why 2025 Is More Important Than Ever

By the end of this year, around one million people in the UK will be living with dementia. Many will still struggle to get a diagnosis, access care, or find clear information. Families often carry the emotional and practical responsibilities families often quietly carry in silence.

This year’s campaign theme encourages people to share their stories. Stories of diagnosis. Stories of caring. Stories of living well with dementia. Every voice contributes to a deeper public understanding and helps make dementia a shared conversation, not a hidden struggle.

What’s Happening at Home Instead South Manchester?

Throughout September, our team at Home Instead South Manchester is getting involved in small but meaningful ways to support the World Alzheimer’s Month campaign.

Here’s what we’re planning locally:

  • Staff Stories: Several of our care professionals and office team members have shared how dementia has impacted their own lives, whether through caring for a loved one or supporting clients through our service. Their reflections will be featured across our social channels and in our office throughout the month.

  • Dementia Friends Training: We’re running refresher sessions for all new office staff and inviting family carers to join us too. Becoming a Dementia Friend helps people understand what it’s like to live with dementia and how to offer support in everyday situations.

  • Awareness Window Display: Our office windows will feature the purple campaign colour throughout September. We’ll be displaying key facts, personal messages from our team, and information on how to ask for help.

  • #AskAboutDementia Conversations: As part of Alzheimer’s Society’s digital campaign, we’re encouraging our team and clients to use the hashtags #AskAboutDementia and #AskAboutAlzheimers to share their experiences, reflections, or questions.

  • We’d love to hear what you’re doing too. If you’re sharing your story or attending a local event, let us know. We’ll happily help amplify your message.

Simple Ways to Get Involved This September

You don’t need a public platform or fundraising team to support World Alzheimer’s Month. Here are some practical ways you can make a difference:

1. Share Your Experience

Have you or someone you care about been affected by dementia? Sharing your story, on social media, in a local paper, or even among friends, can help others feel less alone.

2. Join a Memory Walk

Alzheimer’s Society’s Memory Walks are taking place across the UK this September. They’re open to everyone and create space to reflect, remember, and connect. You can find your nearest event on the Alzheimer’s Society website.

3. Start a Conversation

Talking about dementia shouldn’t feel awkward or taboo. Ask questions. Share facts. Offer a listening ear. Every conversation helps break down stigma.

4. Support a Carer

If you know someone caring for a loved one with dementia, check in on them. Offer a cup of tea. Send a message. Help with errands. Small gestures make a big difference.

5. Learn More About Dementia

Alzheimer’s Society, Age UK, and Dementia UK offer clear, accessible resources on everything from diagnosis to daily living. At Home Instead, we’re also happy to talk to you about how we support people living with dementia at home.

Looking Beyond September

Although World Alzheimer’s Month is a dedicated awareness campaign, the reality of dementia doesn’t stop on 30th September. Neither should our efforts.

As we look ahead to the future, the 2025 World Alzheimer Report, focusing on rehabilitation, will be released later this year. It’s expected to offer practical recommendations for helping people with dementia maintain daily skills and confidence.

At Home Instead South Manchester, we’ll be reading this closely and considering how we can adapt our support in light of emerging guidance and international best practice.

Let’s Keep the Conversation Going

World Alzheimer’s Month is about unity. About recognising the scale of the challenge but also the power of connection. Whether you’re lighting your window in purple, joining a walk, or simply learning more, your actions matter.

Let’s continue to speak up for those who might struggle to do so alone. Let’s keep listening. Keep learning. And keep supporting each other.

Because no one should have to face dementia without understanding, kindness, and care.
