Home Instead Hamilton supports #AskAboutDementia this September for World Alzheimer’s Month.
September marks World Alzheimer’s Month, a time when communities across the globe come together to raise awareness, offer support, and encourage meaningful conversations around dementia. At Home Instead Hamilton, we’re embracing this opportunity with open hearts. Through personal stories from our care professionals, insights from the families we support, and details about local events we’re attending or hosting, we’re proud to be part of this global campaign in a very local way. This year’s theme, #AskAboutDementia, reminds us all that understanding begins with curiosity and that change begins with each of us.
Now, let’s explore what World Alzheimer’s Month is all about, why it’s particularly important here in Hamilton, and how you can get involved, whether through attending events, sharing your story, or simply asking a question.
World Alzheimer’s Month is a global awareness initiative led by Alzheimer’s Disease International. Since 2012, the campaign has aimed to break down stigma, increase public understanding, and encourage positive action around dementia.
It takes place every September, with World Alzheimer’s Day falling on the 21st. This year, the campaign runs from 1st–29th September 2025, and its message is both simple and powerful: questions are welcome. Asking about dementia can lead to greater understanding, early detection, and better support.
Here in Hamilton, this campaign reminds us of the real people behind the statistics: our clients, their families, our neighbours, and even our colleagues.
The official theme for 2025, #AskAboutDementia encourages conversation over silence. At Home Instead Hamilton, we believe this message couldn’t be more timely. Many families in our area still find it difficult to talk about dementia. The uncertainty, fear, and emotional weight of a potential diagnosis often lead to delays in seeking help.
This campaign gives us all permission to start the conversation. And that includes us, right here in the office.
Want to get involved locally?
We’re inviting our care professionals and office team to share their own experiences and thoughts. Whether you’ve supported a client through early symptoms or have personal memories of a loved one with Alzheimer’s, your insight could inspire someone else to speak up.
Dementia doesn’t just affect the person diagnosed. It touches families, carers, and entire communities. Here in South Lanarkshire, we know many people are caring for loved ones at home while juggling work, life, and the emotional journey of supporting someone through changes.
Our Care Professionals at Home Instead Hamilton witness this daily. We’re proud to support families across Hamilton, Blantyre, Larkhall, Bothwell, and beyond with care that’s tailored to the person, not just their condition.
But care isn’t just about routines and medications. It’s about understanding, listening, and adapting. That’s why World Alzheimer’s Month is so important, it keeps these values front and centre.
Let’s talk about the scale of the issue, not to alarm, but to illustrate why awareness is so necessary.
Behind each of these figures is a person. A life changed. A family impacted. These are the people we support every day in Hamilton and across South Lanarkshire.
One of the goals of this year’s campaign is to promote early recognition. Spotting the signs early can help individuals access the support they need sooner, which can make a meaningful difference in quality of life.
Here are some symptoms that could indicate dementia:
If you’ve noticed any of these changes in a loved one, speaking with a GP is an important next step.
This September, we’re marking World Alzheimer’s Month by focusing on both awareness and action.
We’re encouraging all Care Professionals to refresh their dementia training, with particular focus on communication techniques and personalised approaches. We believe continuous learning helps us better serve our clients and their families.
In the office, our team will be sharing personal reflections, real client stories (with permission), and conversation starters around dementia. We’ll also display campaign materials in our windows to prompt public discussion.
We’re looking into organising a local Memory Walk later in the month, open to our staff, clients’ families, and the wider community. It’s a chance to remember, support, and connect.
If you’re part of a local group, church, or school in Hamilton and would like to collaborate on a dementia awareness event, please get in touch with our team.
We’re also proud to be supporting a new community initiative taking place right here in South Lanarkshire. Starting Wednesday 3 September 2025, the Dementia & Seniors Group at Blantyre LIFE will run on the first Wednesday of every month, from 11:00am to 1:00pm.
Held at 90 Park Lane, Blantyre, G72 9AS, this welcoming, free event is open to those living with dementia, their carers, or anyone in the elderly community looking for connection and conversation. It’s a relaxed space where you can enjoy a cuppa, meet new people, and take part in optional activities.
There’s no need to book — just come along. If you’d like more details, please contact Tracy McMorran on 07471 518734.

Your lived experience matters. Whether you’re a carer, a client, or a family member, your voice helps challenge outdated ideas about dementia.
Support Alzheimer’s Society UK, Alzheimer’s Research UK, or local initiatives helping people in Hamilton and South Lanarkshire.
The simple act of asking a question “What’s it like living with dementia?” can open doors to understanding, empathy, and support.
World Alzheimer’s Month is supported by international organisations and healthcare companies working to improve diagnosis, care, and research. But progress doesn’t only happen in labs or policy meetings, it happens in everyday acts of compassion, knowledge-sharing, and community care.
That’s where we come in. That’s where you come in.
World Alzheimer’s Day on 21 September will see the release of the 2025 World Alzheimer Report, focusing on rehabilitation and long-term support. At Home Instead Hamilton, this theme resonates with our daily work, delivering care that’s built around the changing needs of the person and their family.
We’ll be using this opportunity to reflect on our own services, connect with local professionals, and recommit to the standards of dignity, respect, and care we hold ourselves to.
Dementia awareness isn’t something we do once a year, it’s part of who we are at Home Instead Hamilton. But campaigns like World Alzheimer’s Month give us a moment to share, to listen, and to act together.
So, we invite you to do just one thing this September: ask.
Ask about dementia. Ask how you can help. Ask what support is available. Ask what we’re doing here in Hamilton. Because every question asked brings us one step closer to a kinder, more informed community.
