Local games and activities are a brilliant way to help an older friend or relative to socialise and have fun outside their home, and there's plenty on offer in Northumberland!
As we age, it can be isolating spending all of our time in the house. That’s why it’s important to make time for hobbies, interests and opportunities to socialise – here are some of our favourite activities for older people in Northumberland.
Morpeth Community Cinema
While a trip to a traditional cinema might not seem like the most sociable occasion, with refreshments provided before every film, Morpeth’s Community Cinema is a great way to meet new people, while getting to watch some great films. They have monthly showings and low-cost tickets, with more information available on their website.
Showings are at 7pm every month at St James’ Community Centre.
Mecca Bingo, Blyth
Next to the Keel Row shopping centre in Blyth is Mecca Bingo – it may seem clichéd, but bingo remains popular with an older crowd, as well as many younger people!
As well as bingo, they offer slots and games, food and drink and a bar, and with plenty of ramps and handles, those who need some extra help getting around are well catered for.
Cramlington Bowling Club
Since 1927, Cramlington Bowling Club has been connecting people in the community, and with the April – September bowling season just around the corner, for those keen to stretch their legs with some gentle exercise, 2023 could be the perfect year to take up a new hobby and join this friendly club.
Walking Football and Netball, Ponteland
Did you know that team sports boost wellbeing and motivation, helping us to feel connected to others? As we age, we do need to slow down a bit, but that doesn’t mean we can’t benefit from being part of a sports team!
Ponteland Leisure Centre offers weekly walking football and netball sessions, with football held 10:30-11:30am on Tuesdays, and netball 12:30-1:30pm on Fridays. More information about the sessions, as well as other Ponteland-based activities for older people, can be found on the Ponteland Aging Well website.
