Loneliness Awareness Week 2026

15th – 21st June 2026 marks Loneliness Awareness Week, a national campaign led by Marmalade Trust that encourages people to talk openly about loneliness, reduce stigma, and create stronger, more connected communities. This year’s theme, “Giving Loneliness a Voice,” highlights the importance of recognising loneliness as a natural human emotion and creating spaces where people feel heard and understood.
At Home Instead South Cheshire, we see first-hand how meaningful companionship can transform lives. While loneliness can affect people of all ages, older adults are particularly vulnerable to social isolation due to retirement, bereavement, health challenges, or reduced mobility. Loneliness Awareness Week provides an important opportunity to shine a light on the issue and remind people that support is available.
What is Loneliness Awareness Week?
Loneliness is something most of us experience at some point in our lives. It isn’t simply about being alone; it’s about feeling disconnected from others and lacking meaningful social interaction.
Loneliness Awareness Week aim to:
- Raise awareness of loneliness and social isolation
- Encourage open conversations about how we feel
- Reduce the stigma surrounding loneliness
- Inspire people to build stronger community connections
- Highlight the support and services available to those who need them
The campaign has grown into a global movement, helping millions of people recognise that loneliness is a common human experience and that talking about it is the first step to overcoming it.
The Hidden Impact of Loneliness
Loneliness can have a significant impact on both physical and mental wellbeing. Research consistently shows that prolonged social isolation can contribute to:
- Increased anxiety and depression
- Reduced confidence and self-esteem
- Poorer physical health outcomes
- Cognitive decline in older adults
- Reduced quality of life
For many older people across Crewe, Nantwich, Sandbach, Alsager and the wider South Cheshire area, a lack of regular social interaction can gradually become part of everyday life. Often, loneliness can develop slowly and can go unnoticed by friends and family.
That’s why community support and companionship are so important.
How Home Instead South Cheshire Helps Reduce Loneliness
At Home Instead South Cheshire, we believe care is about much more than practical support. Our companionship-led approach focuses on building genuine relationships that help older adults remain connected, engaged and independent in their own homes.
Sometimes the most meaningful support comes from simply having someone to spend time with.
Our Care Professionals provide companionship through:
- Friendly visits and conversation
- Enjoying hobbies and interests together
- Playing games and sharing activities
- Accompanying clients on walks
- Visiting local cafes and community groups
- Supporting attendance at social events
These regular interactions often become a highlight of the week and can make a profound difference to someone’s wellbeing.
Helping People Stay Connected
We also support older adults to maintain relationships with family, friends and their local community.
This might include:
- Assistance with video calls and technology
- Accompanied shopping trips
- Transport to social clubs and appointments
- Support to attend faith groups and community activities
- Encouragement to participate in local events
Our goal is always to help people continue living the life they love, surrounded by the people and places that matter most.
Community Connections Across South Cheshire
One of the wonderful things about South Cheshire is the strong sense of community that exists across our towns and villages. There are many local opportunities for people to meet others, stay active and build friendships, including:
Community Walking Groups
Walking groups continue to be a fantastic way to improve both physical and mental wellbeing. Wellbeing walks organised across South Cheshire offer opportunities to enjoy fresh air, gentle exercise and social conversation in a welcoming environment. Crewe’s popular wellbeing walks in Queens Park are just one example of activities that bring people together.
Coffee Mornings and Social Groups
Many churches, community centres and local charities throughout Crewe, Nantwich, Sandbach and surrounding areas host regular coffee mornings, friendship groups and social gatherings where people can meet others in a relaxed setting.
Volunteering Opportunities
Volunteering is a powerful way to combat loneliness, both for those receiving support and those offering it. Local organisations across South Cheshire provide opportunities to connect with others while making a positive difference within the community.
Community Support Organisations
Local charities and community groups work tirelessly to support vulnerable isolated individuals throughout the area, providing practical help, social activities and opportunities for connection. Organisations supporting people in Crewe and Nantwich continue to play an important role in reducing isolation and strengthening community ties.
Small Acts Can Make a Big Difference
You don’t need to organise a large event to make a difference during Loneliness Awareness Week.
Simple actions can have a lasting impact:
- Call a friend or relative you haven’t spoken to recently
- Check in on an older neighbour
- Invite someone for a cup of tea
- Start a conversation with someone new
- Attend a local community event
- Encourage a loved one to join a social group
Often, the smallest gestures create the strongest connections.
