For this year’s #AlzheimersAwarenessMonth, we're highlighting areas of support available in Sheffield.
Age UK Sheffield’s Wellbeing Centres are dementia day services that create joyful, caring and safe environments for people living with dementia or memory loss.
“We believe that memory loss shouldn’t be a barrier to fun, friendship and stimulation for the mind. We’re passionate about creating a safe, loving and welcoming environment for our members.
Our Dementia Wellbeing Centres are like nowhere else. After all, we designed them as a place that we’d want to go to. Whether it’s Mexican week, or the visits by therapy pony Leo, painting, or an archery competition, we always make fun happen.”
At the day centre (aside from all the fun to be had!), Age UK Sheffield also use a technique called Cognitive Stimulation Therapy – aiming to enable members to fight back against their memory loss and/or dementia.
Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) is a method used to treat symptoms of mild-moderate dementia. It can often also be quite enjoyable, group members can take part in significant and stimulating activities, which helps to maintain memory and mental functioning. Evidence has suggested that CST can be just as beneficial as drug treatments for dementia.
Each of Age UK Sheffield’s sessions cover a different topic, keeping it new and fresh each week! They also have four different areas where they host the day centres; Norfolk Park, Botanical Gardens, Hector’s House in Ecclesall Woods, and Hillsborough Park.
“We know that when our loved ones are happier, we’re happier.”
